Higgsov bozon je hipotetska elementarna čestica kojom se prema Standardnom modelu objašnjava masa drugih čestica, a posebno zašto su W i Z bozoni masivni za razliku od fotona koji nemaju masu.
Teoriju postojanje takvog bozona postavio je 1964. godine škotski fizičar Peter Ware Higgs.
Higgsov bozon do danas nije eksperimentalno dokazan. Predviđa se da će biti dokazan pomoću velikog hadronskog akceleratora (engleski Large Hadron Collider ili LHC) koji se dovršava u CERN-u (Evropskom centru za nuklearna istraživanja) nedaleko od Ženeve (Švicarska). Dokazivati će se sudarima proton-proton za koje se tvrdi da bi mogli dovesti do nastanka Higgsovog bozona.
Nova saznanja
4. jula, 2012., CERN je objavio formalnu potvrdu da čestica "u skladu sa Higgs-ovim bozonom" postoji, jer je njena oznaka detektovana u podacima sa veoma malom vjerovatnoćom od 0,00003% (pet sigma) proizvedena slučajnim kolebanjima; štaviše, fizičari čestica još trebaju da potvrde da je to zaista očekivani bozon, i da nije neka druga, do sada neotkrivena čestica.
