These files are under claims that they were published before 1924, or before 1963 without copyright renewal, and are thus PD. However, I'm not convinced that is the case - it's not clear which images were actually published at that time (as Jones was a newspaper photographer) and which were not published until recent digitization. The Boston Public Library, which holds the collection, says the family holds the copyright - and the BPL tends not to be overly conservative with copyright. While I would very much like for these images to be PD, any that haven't provably been published when taken should be considered copyrighted until 2037.

Some of them have specific date pre-1924 dates others are vague -- Thats Just Great (talk) 06:48, 10 January 2020 (UTC):[reply]
@Thats Just Great: The date that the photos were taken is not the issue here - the issue is when the photos were published. That is not always the same. Pi.1415926535 (talk) 06:56, 10 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Others can help search in Genealogy Bank and Newspapers.com, if you have an account there. Restrict the search to Massachusetts or keep all of USA if you think the image might have been distributed by one of the photographic services or the Associated Press. The ones I loaded I had found in newspapers, but I should have loaded the published version when I uploaded the library prints. I am glad that his photos were preserved, photographers and writers were rarely credited for their work. Even when his photos were distributed by the Associated Press or another distributor, he was never credited. It would be sad if all we had were the fuzzy newspaper versions, that only gave us a glimpse of what the subject looked like. Please note that I have ONLY looked for the ones that I uploaded, it is a time consuming process since there may be 50 to 100 articles in local papers for the event that the photo was taken at, and each one has to be looked at to see what photo they used. Remember Leslie Jones was rarely credited for his photos, he was just a staff photographer who kept his negatives, and then donated them to a museum. RAN (talk)
