Notes |
English: Painted by Frank Johnston in 1919. This painting shows Curtiss JN-4 “Canucks,” flying above Lake Ontario and the Royal Flying Corps' Beamsville Aerodrome. Commissioned to paint Canadian aviators training for overseas service, future Group of Seven artist Frank Johnston first found his subject to be “a difficult one to get any pictures out of.” After experiencing flight and studying aerial photographs, Johnston transmitted his newfound enthusiasm for “this very fine sport” in canvases like this one. |
