Deletion request

[edit]

Hi, on June 15 you asked for deletion of Image:en-us-entance.ogg. There has never been a file with that name, did you make a typo? Thuresson 01:51, 25 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Found it, Image:En-us-entance-verb.ogg. Thuresson 00:45, 26 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Thanks for being more on top of this than I was. I'll try to be more careful in future. --Dvortygirl 26 June 2005 15:16 (UTC)

Missing License Tags

[edit]

Hi - thanks for contributing all the pronunciation files. Quite a few of those are missing license info though, have a look here. Please add license tags. thanks! -- Duesentrieb(?!) 13:25, 23 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Some of the files you uploaded are also not on gallery pages or in categories - see here. Please make them accessible by topic on the commons. You can use the CommonSense link in the list to get automatic suggestions where to put those files. -- Duesentrieb(?!) 13:28, 23 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, thanks for your response... re-reading the notes above, i'm sorry they sound very stern - they where intended as a hint to how to make things better. That you didn't know about those tools is not wonder, the OrphanImage thingy has only been online for a few days. I havn't even started to really advertize it - I basically ran into your uploads while testing, found that your are active, and though i'd leave a message ;)

As to categorizing... categorization is important, but not urgent. Did you try CommonSense? It often helps quite a bit, especially if you enter keywords by hand. Generally, you can put all spoken wikinews articles into Category:Wikinews audio (many are directly in Category:Wikinews, but a more specific category is better, IMHO). You can also use the (badly named) Template Audio upload.

But I belive Wikinews audio should never be the only category - the files should also be sorted into categories by topic. I have put all your "leftovers" into categories - not all perfect, I guess, but now findable. For example, I have put Image:Space Shuttle Discovery Landing Postponed.ogg into Category:Space Shuttle Discovery, and Image:En-Yahoo launches new Podcast Search.ogg into Category:Internet search engines. Maybe that gives you an idea for the future.

Have fun, and thanks again for contributing -- Duesentrieb(?!) 22:42, 23 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, and if you want to get familiar with the (messy) category structure on commons, have a look at the CategoryTree tool. -- Duesentrieb(?!) 22:46, 23 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Yer dialect

[edit]

I'm having a minor dispute over the inclusion of one of your pronunciation files in the article Minnesota at English Wikipedia and I'd like to know what dialect of American English you're speaking. If you're not sure you can always specify where you grew up and where your parents come from. I'm also asking because I think it might be a good idea to include this in the file info of the stuff you upload. There's no need to specify it in the the file name, but it can be very useful if one would like to illustrate your particular dialect.

Peter Isotalo 20:24, 5 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Your dialect for Minnesota is not, well, Minnesotan. You nasalize the "inne" and the "sota" sounds like a British version of soda with the letter o pronounced like Southern English. I'd put your English near the Carolinas but I haven't heard the rest of your material. I would prefer to re-record the mp3 as a native Minnesotan and use my file instead as much as you would wherever you live to achieve the correct pronunciation and dialect. Also for future reference, you must indicate your regional dialect on all mp3 files. Davumaya 02:13, 17 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The idea that each and every place name has to be pronounced in the local dialect doesn't really have that much merit in my opinion. It's not like Minnesotans are the only ones that have to use the term "Minnesota", and it's a rather odd idea that everyone should pronounce it exactly the way Minnesotans. What really matters is that the speaker is a native speaker of American English, since that's the applicable standard. Dvorty informed as to her dialectal origins on my talkpage a while back.
And I hate to say this, Davu, but your own variety of Minnesotan is... well... rather obviously colored by your Chinese heritage. I'm not kidding. It was obvious from just listening to the sound file that there was something slightly odd about it, and your user boxes pretty much confirmed it. Though I don't question your status as a native speaker of American English, you're representing a very small minority of Minnesotans.

Shtooka

[edit]

whats 'Sktooka'?

Shtooka is a project to record and distribute audio pronunciation of words in different languages. It was created by a fellow in France who goes by the handle zMoo. It includes audio recording software and a explorer/player. To record I put in a list of words as text, turn it on, and it records me saying each one, names, tags, and outputs the files automatically. There's an explorer that will let you listen to (for instance) my audio alongside zMoo's French audio, if you have a list of translations you're trying to learn. You'll find the details here.

Hello Dvortygirl!

Thank you for providing images to Wikimedia Commons. Please keep in mind that images uploaded to Commons should be useful to all users of Wikimedia projects. This is possible only if the images can be found by other people.

To allow others to find the images you uploaded here, the images should be in some place that can be found by navigating the category structure. This means that you should put the images into appropriate topic pages, categories, optionally galleries, or both of them (see Commons:Categories). To find good categories for your images, the CommonSense tool may help.

You can find a convenient overview of your uploaded files in this gallery.

The important point is that the images should be placed in the general structure somewhere. There are a large number of completely unsorted images on Commons right now. If you would like to help to place some of those images where they can be found, please do!

Thank you. BotMultichill (talk) 12:42, 26 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Dvortygirl!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Keyboards

[edit]

In case your username is a reference to Dvorak. I found the biggest barrier was using shortcuts, including in games. Not always easy to remember where keys are when they aren't labeled, or you use more than one input layout (maybe you can't control them) and are used to just using a certain position like the ctrl-X, C, V with qwerty. For open-source software adding this is just a matter of effort; for paid software like games, it's sort of like adding colorblind support. Some companies will do it, but not a large market. Also not sure what implications are for other languages; is qwerty still significantly worse? 2601:600:8500:B2D9:7400:267E:F91E:906 04:28, 9 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Dvorak

[edit]

It might be possible to carefully lift the keys with a small srewdriver or a knife and put them back on the way you want it. Alternatively, you could plug in two USB keyboards and see if you can assign each it's own mapping. Also you could buy online a set of those selfadhesive stickers that are for ( in Dvortygirl's case) Greek. Then you have a Greek Dvorak keyboard! But with a little luck you can find stickers for the Latin alphabet. I have seen them for marking keys with different colours. SimonDeDanser (talk) 06:50, 9 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
