Incorrect/missing colors of waterbodies

Article(s): en:Vironniemi

Request
The map above is just an example; there are probably 100+ of these maps with incorrect/missing waterbody colors on maps of Helsinki. File:Helsinki districts.svg is the base map file and has the correct coloring; please compare it to the image above. Those incorrect maps were made by User:Stadscykel who later fixed some of them (e.g. Special:Diff/43585007, Special:Diff/43585930), but most of those maps still have incorrect/missing colors. Related discussions on fi.wikipedia: link and link, and here on Commons: link. --JAAqqO (talk) 01:06, 31 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
If someone ever decides to fix these, here is a list of 130 map files that need fixing:

Graphist opinion(s)
JAAqqO, please check the sample you highlighted which I have uploaded a new version of. If correct, the good news is that it is easy to recreate each map from the base File:Helsinki districts.svg (of course, the bad news is there are 130). Chipmunkdavis (talk) 02:03, 26 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Chipmunkdavis, yes, that one looks good now, thank you. --JAAqqO (talk) 04:39, 1 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
One of the discussions you linked mentions the colours are a poor choice for colour-blind users, may be worth considering that too before editing 130 files. Chipmunkdavis (talk) 02:07, 26 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Map of the route from the Varangians to the Greeks

Article(s): en:Route from the Varangians to the Greeks

Request
I would like for the original image of 2017 (uploaded by Minnekon) to be restored, but with en:Truso in the correct place (namely on the right bank of the Vistula, as Artur Andrzej tried to move it in 2023). The issue with the 2023 correction is that the overall quality of the image has degraded. I tried to fix the problem myself by editing the 2017 original and moving Truso to the right bank in Microsoft Paint, but I got much the same result as Artur Andrzej in 2023. It probably has something to do with the .gif format that I do not understand. If anyone can make a higher-quality image in any other kind of format (like .svg), perhaps even with a different underlying map altogether, but showing much the same information, that would also be appreciated; I'm not tied to this image in particular. --Nederlandse Leeuw (talk) 07:58, 12 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Article(s): List of first-level administrative divisions by area (for example)

Request
Hello, having initially posted this request on the Commons:File requests page, it was suggested that I redirect here instead. Is it possible to create maps in the "SVG locator maps (location map scheme)" format for the States of Somalia? From what I see, this is one of the rare administrative subdivisions that does not yet have a map in this format. It would therefore be in addition to the regions of Somalia, which have their own category. --Ellicrum {bablute [...]} 13:24, 15 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Europe FoP map

Article(s): w:en:Freedom of panorama (to replace Commons-slanted EU-FoP map in the article, which is supposed to be neutral (and not excessively favor Wikimedian perspective) per w:en:WP:NEUTRAL.)

Request
  1. Change the color for both Belarus and Ukraine to yellow from red, as both have non-commercial FoP (yellow is for non-commercial FoP countries).
  2. Change also Sweden to light green as there is indeed FoP only for buildings, but no commercial FoP for monuments and public art.
  3. Add Kosovo, as dark green (yes FoP since October 2023).
  4. Add Andorra, Monaco, San Marino, and the Vatican City - as red.

@JWilz12345: Can you describe why File:Freedom_of_Panorama_in_Europe.svg cannot be used instead? cmɢʟee ⋅τaʟκ 07:56, 10 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Cmglee (note: the ping didn't work for some reason, but this page is on my watchlist as of now)
It is based on the Commons perspective (in which non-commercial uses are treated as "not OK"). But since that article is in English Wikipedia, it should be neutral and should not favor on Wikimedia side. JWilz12345 (Talk|Contrib's.) 08:02, 10 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@JWilz12345: Got it. Did you mean "should not favor on Wikipedia side"? I think we should copy the code from File:Freedom_of_Panorama_in_Europe.svg and modify as needed to maintain consistency. cmɢʟee ⋅τaʟκ 08:33, 10 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Cmglee ah yes, though for average readers, they always treat Wikipedia and Wikimedia as a single community. But that is another story.
And yes, it is best to use the same map. I've read somewhere that the former version of File:Freedom_of_Panorama_in_Europe.svg was purportedly hard to edit, and I assume the NC map used the same mapping code. JWilz12345 (Talk|Contrib's.) 09:46, 10 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

African history map of kingdoms and empires

Article(s): en:History of Africa, en:List of kingdoms in Africa throughout history

Request
Hi, I was wondering if anyone could put together a map of Africa overlayed with the maximum extent of some major kingdoms and empires. I can provide a list of kingdoms and empires that'll give a fair representation of the continent's history, although many of them might overlap so maybe have the fill transparent? At the moment we use File:African-civilizations-map-pre-colonial.svg which has extraordinary bias towards west and north Africa, and gets some of the territory wrong such as for Aksum and Hausa (which was never a kingdom). The map used would ideally include Arabia, the Levant, and some of Iberia as these were territories which were covered. The style I'm happy to leave to you, although I'd like it to be colourful. --Alexanderkowal (talk) 12:35, 12 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Map of the Battle of Peregonovka

Article(s): Battle of Peregonovka

Request
Hi everyone. The article about the battle of Peregonovka needs a map depicting the battle. In Colin Darch's 2020 book Nestor Makhno and Rural Anarchism in Ukraine, 1917-1921, he includes a map by cartographer Jenny Sandler depicting the overall battle (Map 5.1 The Engagement at Peregonovka, September 1919), based on the White movement's own maps published in the 1960s. If someone here would be able to draw up a similar map, based on Sandler's work, that would be very much appreciated. Something similar to the Waterloo campaign or Battle of Stalingrad maps would be ideal. --Grnrchst (talk) 10:09, 31 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Rio de Janeiro public transport map

Article(s): over a hundred pages as can be seen on the picture page, for instance pt:TransBrasil

Request
There are several inconsistencies on this map, since the last update is from 2018. I will list them below:
  • VLT Carioca:
    • line 1 has been expanded to the west, with a new station called "Terminal Intermodal Gentileza";
    • the branch between Praia Formosa and São Diogo has been cancelled and should be removed;
    • line 3 entered operation, I'll detail the new stations down below;
  • BRT Transbrasil: has started operation, going all the way until Terminal Intermodal Gentileza. Please double check stations names as well as the path (the expansion towards downtown has been discarded);
  • Other than that they've changed their logo, it'd be nice to update on the legend, check their website
  • BRT Transoceânica: is currently in operation. Should be renamed to "BHLS Transoceânico" and has three different lines, that enter bus corridor between Charitas and their destination, and go towards Niterói downtown;
  • Bonde de Santa Teresa: has been expanded, southwest until Dois Irmãos, a branch towards Monte Alegre and a small branch towards Muratori, are all operating;
  • Ônibus expresso: all of them don't exist anymore and should be removed;
  • Conexão BRT: BRT operator created three regular bus lines similar to previous Ônibus Expresso which could be interesting to show on the map. You can check their details on their website: https://mobi-rio.rio.br/
  • MetrôRio: the two circles in Estácio station should be a single circle as it is a single station with integration between two lines.
  • Teleféricos (cable cars): Alemão exists but is still suspended; Providência resumed operating; Rocinha never had a proper project (just politician intention) and therefore should be removed;
  • Planos inclinados (funiculars): title is missing an "s"; P.I. do Condomínio Equitativa, P.I. Regina Coeli, P.I. do Cemitério São João Batista, Funicular Rio Arte and Monotrilho de Vila Santa Cecília are private and should be removed. All other are currently in operation.
  • Double check all station names. I will do this homework and edit my comment.
    • MetrôRio (subway) - they have added suffixes to stations located on neighborhoods with more than one station, indicating the neighborhood, as can be seen on their website. Therefore these stations should be renamed:
      • Lines 1 / 4, from north to south:
        • Uruguai should be "Uruguai / Tijuca"
        • Saens Peña should be "Saens Peña / Tijuca"
        • São Francisco Xavier should be "São Francisco Xavier / Tijuca"
        • Afonso Pena should be "Afonso Pena / Tijuca"
        • Central should be "Central do Brasil / Centro"
        • Presidente Vargas should be "Saara / Presidente Vargas" (yes, this is an exception to the rule)
        • Uruguaiana should be "Uruguaiana / Centro"
        • Carioca should be "Carioca / Centro"
        • Cinelândia should be "Cinelândia / Centro"
        • Cardeal Arcoverde should be "Cardeal Arcoverde / Copacabana"
        • Siqueira Campos should be "Siqueira Campos / Copacabana"
        • Cantagalo should be "Cantagalo / Copacabana"
        • General Osório should be "General Osório / Ipanema"
        • Nossa Senhora da Paz should be "Nossa Senhora da Paz / Ipanema"
        • Jardim de Alah should be "Jardim de Alah / Leblon"
        • Jardim Oceânico should be "Jardim Oceânico / Barra da Tijuca"
      • Line 2, from downtown towards northwest:
        • Nova América / Del Castilho should be "Del Castilho"
        • On Pavuna, only the subway station is called "Pavuna"; the SuperVia one is "Pavuna / São João de Meriti"
    • SuperVia, corrections on the lines, starting from downtown towards the suburbs, on counterclockwise fashion (for more information, check OSM or their website:
      • Linha Deodoro / Santa Cruz:
        • Mangueira should be "Mangueira / Jamelão"
        • Silva Freire is only serviced on Linha Japeri, maybe we could duplicate the line between Deodoro and Central do Brasil to indicate that?
        • Terminal Deodoro should be "Deodoro"
        • Regarding "São José de Magalhães Bastos", only the BRT station has that name, the train station name is "Magalhães Bastos"
        • Mocidade de Padre Miguel should be "Mocidade / Padre Miguel"
        • Santissimo should be "Santíssimo" (note the "í")
        • Benjamin do Monte should be "Benjamim do Monte" (note the "m")
      • Serviço Circular Honório - Deodoro has been deactivated and should be removed from the map
      • Linha Japeri:
        • Riardo de Albuquerque should be "Ricardo de Albuquerque"
      • Linha Belford Roxo:
        • Cavalcante should be "Cavalcanti"
        • Pavuna should be "Pavuna / São João de Meriti"
      • Linha Saracuruna:
        • Bonsucesso TIM should be "Bonsucesso"
        • Saracuna should be "Saracuruna"
      • Linha Vila Inhomirim:
        • (all correct)
      • Linha Guapimirim:
        • missing stop "Santa Dalila" between Parque Estrela and Suruí
        • missing stop "Santa Guilhermina" between Suruí and Iriri
        • Parada Capim should be "Jardim Guapimirim"
    • VLT Carioca
      • As mentioned above, there is a new branch from Rodoviária to the west, with a new final stop called "Terminal Intermodal Gentileza"
      • The branch from Praia Formosa to São Diogo has been cancelled and should be removed.
      • For more details, check OSM as well as their website.
      • Stop names corrections, on clockwise fashion:
        • Line 1
          • José Bonifácio stop was never constructed and should be removed
          • Cidade do Samba should be "Cidade do Samba Tia Ciata"
          • Parada dos Navios should be "Parada dos Navios Valongo"
          • Antônio Carlos should be "Antônio Carlos MAM"
        • Line 2
          • Praça XV should be relocated closer to the water, next to the ferry station
          • Rio Branco should be "Colombo"
          • Praça Tiradentes should be "Tiradentes"
          • Itamaraty has been moved to a different position, southwest of the letter "I" on the map (check OSM for proper position); it's name is "Cristiano Ottoni Pequena África"
          • Central do Brasil should be "Central" (only for VLT / tramway);
        • Line 3 has started operation, names corrections:
          • Santa Rita should be "Santa Rita Pretos Novos"
          • Camerino should be "Camerino Rosas Negras"
          • Itamaraty has been replaced, as mentioned above.
    • BRT, always from south to north, from east to west (their website for more information):
      • Transoeste
        • Cittá América should be "Bosque de Marapendi"
        • Porto dos Cabritos should be "Paulo Malta Rezende"
        • Freeway should be "Afrânio Costa"
        • Riveira should be "Riviera"
        • Pontões/BarraSul should be "Pontões/Barra Sul"
        • Recreio/Salvador Allende should be separated. The station along the Transoeste line (on the east-west axis) is "Salvador Allende"
        • Glaucio Gil should be "Gláucio Gil"
        • Benvindo Novaes should be "Benvindo de Novaes"
        • Gramado (close to Campo Grande) has been removed.
      • Transcarioca
        • Rio II should be "Rio 2"
        • Pedro Correia should be "Pedro Corrêa"
        • Fundão should be removed, it is duplicated with "Terminal Fundão / Aroldo Melodia" (the latter is in correct position)
      • Transolímpica
        • As mentioned above, "Recreio / Salvador Allende" should be separated; the circle below is "Terminal Recreio"
        • Catedral de Recreio should be "Catedral do Recreio"
        • Padre João Chribbin should be "Padre João Cribbin (Marechal Mallet)"
      • Transbrasil
        • To start with, the line starts in "Terminal Intermodal Gentileza" so stations Candelária, Presidente Vargas, Sambódromo, Cidade Nova, Leopoldina and Gasômetro should be removed. Other than that, most stations have different names:
        • Cajú / São Francisco should be "Vasco da Gama"
        • Parque Vitória should be "Benfica"
        • Joana Nascimento should be "Hospital de Bonsucesso / CPOR"
        • Nova Holanda should be "Baixa do Sapateiro"
        • Darci Vargas should be "Rubens Vaz"
        • Ramos should be "Piscinão de Ramos"
        • Escola da Marinha Mercante should be "Marinha Mercante"
        • Escola da Marinha do Brasil should be "Lobo Júnior"
        • Brás de Pina should be "Mercado São Sebastião"
        • the point with no name before Ponto Chique needs to be removed
        • Ponto Chique should be "Cidade Alta"
        • the BRT point next to train station Parada de Lucas needs to be removed
        • Isidro Rocha / Correia Andrade should be "Vigário Geral / Praça Dois"
        • Manguinhos should be removed
        • Irajá / Ceasa should be "Irajá"
        • Coelho Neto should be "Fazenda Botafogo"
        • Barros Filho should be removed
        • Carrefour / Guadalupe should be "Jardim Guadalupe"
        • missing one more stop, "Guadalupe" before Terminal Deodoro
      • Other than that, next to Transbrasil, there are two bus terminals under construction that you might want to include: "Terminal Missões" (next to Cidade Alta station) and "Terminal Margaridas" (between Vigário Geral / Praça Dois and Irajá).
      • And the Conexão BRT bus lines, the stops have names and it would be very nice to include them as well. However they were not included on OSM yet and therefore for a non-local would be hard to get stop positions; this could be added on a second moment.
    • BHLS Transoceânico
      • There are three lines, all of them start on downtown on "Terminal Rodoviário João Goulart", go on regular bus stops and enter the BHLS corridor that currently exists. I think it'd be good to include the path towards downtown, as well as the path to the neighborhoods outside of the bus corridor, but without including the regular bus stops, only the BHLS corridor stops. You can check routes on OSM:
      • Monsenhor Jacarandá should be "Cafubá"
      • (current) Cafubá should be "Lagoa de Piratininga"
      • Roma should be "Piratininga"
      • Cornelio de Mello Jr should be "Maralegre"
      • Multicenter has been dropped and should be removed
      • Madri should be "Santo Antônio"
      • Juriti should be "Vila São Pedro"
      • São Fabio should be "Morro da Peça"
      • Sibipurunas should be removed
      • Avenida Central should be "Praça Central"
      • Celso Peçanha should be "Boa Vista"

You can check current data on OpenStreetMap, as I (among other mappers) have it up-to-date there.--ArlindoPereira (talk) 08:35, 16 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Request

Another user ("Quangkhanhhuynh") alerted me to some errors with the above map and I would like to request a number of changes to this map based on this file in the National Library of France:

For one, the Province of Hà Nam (河南) and the Province of Phúc Yên (福安) are missing from this map. That is, they are missing from the current map at the Wikimedia Commons but are depicted on the Gallica map dated 1937.

Another mistake I made at the map is listing most of the Province of Đồng Nai Thượng (同狔上) as the Province of Đà Lạt (多樂), in reality the vast majority of the area depicted as "Đà Lạt (多樂)" on the map is actually "Đồng Nai Thượng (同狔上)". Meanwhile, the city of Đà Lạt (多樂) and some surrounding areas were a separate area as can be found on the Gallica map.

Additionally, the Province of Pleiku (坡離俱) did not yet exist in the year of 1937 and should be completely removed with its territory going to the Province of Kon Tum (崑嵩).

Furthermore, I made the following mistakes in taking the names from the French administration rather than that of the Southern Dynasty:

  • Nha Trang (芽莊) -> Khánh Hòa (慶和)

@Donald Trung I would need a better location for this region "Province of Phúc Yên (福安)" as it's very hard for me to find it, thanks. --please ping me-- Goran tek-en (talk) 16:47, 22 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Goran tek-en It's between Vĩnh Yên province and Bắc Ninh province. You can also use this map. Quangkhanhhuynh (talk) 09:49, 23 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Dynasti Draft-1. --please ping me-- Goran tek-en (talk) 15:01, 23 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
(From the end of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century, France gradually established a governing apparatus on Gia Lai land. After many changes, mergers, and separations to establish administrative units in the Central Highlands, on May 24th, 1932, according to the Decree of the Governor General of Indochina, Pleiku province was established.) - "Gia Lai". The Province of Pleiku (坡離俱) did exist in 1937 and the Gallica map didn't list it. Other than that an issue on the map draft is that the first Traditional Chinese character (沱) of "Đà Nẵng (沱㶞)" seems to be missing. --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 15:51, 23 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Donald Trung Please don't give so much information I can't use or comprehend, it's just really confusing for me. Just tell me what to edit, thanks.
Draft Dynasty-2.
Regarding that missing character, When I past it in as font TakaoPGothic it gives me nothing. I have looked in my font manager and there I can see that character, but when I copy and past it it's the same result nothing.
Should we try another font from this list that works here at wikimedia --please ping me-- Goran tek-en (talk) 13:16, 24 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Donald Trung You are the requester here so you have to tell me what to change. Hope you understand @Quangkhanhhuynh, it can get very confusing for me otherwise. --please ping me-- Goran tek-en (talk) 13:19, 24 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Goran tek-en: , Draft 2 (two) looks amazing 🤩, it's odd that the character does appear well in the current version but not the improved version. Maybe it's just a display issue on my mobile telephone. But the draft shows all the improvements that have to be made, the only issue is in fact the Traditional Chinese character "沱". --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 13:25, 24 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Donald Trung I opened my previous version (the one now uploaded) and in that original svg file the same character is missing. The only thing I can guess right now is that I have updated my computer and the tool (Inkscape) I work in and that the issue could be there. Could you give me some other fonts från that list that I can try, thanks. --please ping me-- Goran tek-en (talk) 13:35, 24 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I only have a mobile device at the moment, but I think that it probably should work with the font called "AR PL UKai TW". -- Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 13:50, 24 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Unfortunately, I can't test it on Inkscape myself, but this looks like the font used by Ms. Phương Anh in the original SVG map on which this is based, so if I would wager a guess I'd say that the "AR PL UKai TW" font will probably properly display it. Oddly enough, I do see the character on my mobile telephone, so it could just be a display issue with your computer, as I assume that the Google Drive File is a screenshot of what you see on your device. — Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 13:52, 24 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Goran tek-en @Donald Trung I saw that Thanh Hóa (清化) is missing 清 and Bắc Kạn (北𣴓) is missing 𣴓 (my phone doesn't have a proper rendering support and I see a box, I think that the reason why it's missing). That's the errors of the file or my phone's fault? Khanh ( talk | contribs | CA | vi ) 14:12, 24 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Donald Trung Is this correct? Should I change all Chinese to this font? --please ping me-- Goran tek-en (talk) 17:04, 24 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
┌───────────────────────────┘
Goran tek-en, yes, this is correct, though I still think that maybe the display issue in your Google Drive files may be due to your device and not due to the font. Could you upload your 2nd (second) draft to the file page and then revert it? Because I suspect that it might just be an issue with your device and not with the map itself. Otherwise just use tje font you've used,
I think that the map is mostly done, other than the fact that one district is missing from one province as Khanh pointed out above.
Thank you very much for all your trouble, excuse me for not having all the necessary information during my first (1st) request. 😕 -- — Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 17:22, 24 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Quangkhanhhuynh, I do see the "Thanh" (清) on my Google Pixel 4A device using the Ecosia browser. As for the "Kạn" (𣴓), when I use my wife's Microsoft Windows 11 laptop 💻 with Microsoft Edge I can see it, but I can't see it on my Google Pixel 4A device with the Ecosia browser. Your device and browser affects what you can and can't see. -- — Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 17:19, 24 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

┌──────────────────────────────────────────┘
Quangkhanhhuynh, no, the Manchu Qing Dynasty never laid any claims to the islands, the Japanese Empire did, the Republic of China claimed it as a response to Japan. The Nguyễn Dynasty also didn't explicitly claim (but did colonise) them until the French made them declare them as "sovereign territory" (See: The Bulletin of the Southern Dynasty in the National Language, 1938, issue N⁰ 8), the French placed these markers with the text "Republique Française - Empire d'Annam - Archipel des Paracels", but the earliest explicit claims were in June 1938 when these became occupied by the French as a part of the territorial dispute with the Japanese. Before that, they were implicitly claimed.
Notice the language used by the Nguyễn Dynasty "Decree N⁰ 10 29-02-Bảo Đại 13", basically "we have claimed these islands since the previous Dynasty", this is true as they administratively belonged to them for centuries, but the European concept of "sovereignty" was only introduced to them in the 1930's. -- — Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 05:15, 27 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I was wrong, apparently The Qing did claim them, explicitly in 1885 the earliest, mostly as a response to the French. But still, the Nguyễn Dynasty also has laid claim to these islands for its entire existence. -- — Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 05:28, 27 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Donald Trung but all the old maps I could find doesn't have two islands on it. Can you explain? Khanh ( talk | contribs | CA | vi ) 09:05, 27 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Quangkhanhhuynh, they were claimed territories and as the above Wikipedia article notes, the French claimed them as long as they had a protectorate over Annam and Tonkin, I mostly asked it to harmonise it with "File:Nguyen Dynasty, administrative divisions map (1838).svg", which lists both archipelagos as a part of the Nguyễn Dynasty. As it's a disputed territory, I don't feel strongly either way to their inclusion or exclusion, as multiple countries (The Republic of China, the United States of America, and the Japanese Empire) also claimed them as their own territories. -- — Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 11:16, 27 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I placed it at the top of the section, some people prefer to see it at the top rather than the bottom, when I added it to the bottom at "Commons:Graphic Lab/Illustration workshop", some editors would remove it and then place a new one at the top.
