English: In the year 1725, the establishment of military arsenals in the city of Tainan marked the beginning of state-controlled logging in the Qing era. For warship construction and repair, military craftmen holding official credentials awere permitted to venture beyond the "Indigenous borders" to log for timber materials, and camphor woods became the most utilized species. Military craftsmen developed a comprehensive system to harvest timber in the mountains and transport them to the Tainan military arsenals for warship construction and repair. From Fangliao in south to Dongshijiao in central, the upstream of Xindian Creek in the north snd to Yilan on the eastern coast, traces of their activities were preserved in local toponyms, inscriptions, and temples, bearing witness to the early days of logging operations in Taiwan. |
