Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Coca-Cola is, almost literally, a death sentence in Mexico. Coca Cola is responsible for a huge health crisis in Mexico as a result of widespread consumption. In 2012, Mexicans consumed 745 8 oz servings per capita, or 176 liters, nearly half a liter per day per person, an impressive figure if one considers this statistic applies as if all Mexicans consumed this product. This consumption is 40% more than North Americans. This habit has brought enormous public health consequences making diabetes the number one killer in Mexico, over exploitation of water tables at a high social cost. While consumption is a personal choice, that choice is also shaped by very effective advertisement, just as cigarette advertising was at one point, leading people to believe aspects about life and life quality in an uneducated population. This should lead to a serious debate about ethical aspects and corporate greed and profits vs public health, especially in vulnerable populations. Pollution due to discarded plastic bottles is also a problem. Photograph was taken in a stand that is part of the Alfeñique fair, sugar made figures (and other materials), day of the dead related traditions in Mexico. The fair, or street stands, set up every year. Taken in Leon, Guanajuato, Mexico.
