Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Rock art is a heritage we have inherited, with many pieces dating back 3,000 to 5,000 years, making it the oldest monument in Ladakh, older than any monastery. India boasts the third-largest concentration of rock art globally, following Australia and Africa. Ladakh's rock art, known as petroglyphs, is so prevalent that it may represent the largest collection in India, if not the world. This art conveys universal themes such as celebration, ritual, tradition, and hunting.

Among the most renowned rock sculptures in Ladakh, second only to Kartse Chamba, is the Mulbekh Chamba. This impressive Maitreya statue, carved into a massive roadside boulder, marks the entrance to Mulbekh village on the Srinagar-Leh highway. It draws Buddhist pilgrims from across Ladakh and holds significant cultural importance for the locals. The village's annual Mentok Stanmo (flower festival) commences with the Thugs spar (banner hoisting) atop the Chamba, accompanied by traditional rituals.
