Era esse lugar o preferido pela elite carioca, para passeios, quer em cadeirinhas, ou a cavalo. Assim, a rainha Dona Maria I, quando saía a passeio, frequentemente aí aparecia em companhia de suas damas da corte, daí provindo a frase repetida pelo povo: “Maria vai com as outras”, em virtude de ser ela louca. E esse dito ficou até hoje com a significação para aquelas que não se sabem governar. (Magalhães Corrêa)
