35 mm slide; color. Scientific Classification: Kingdom: Animalia; Phylum: Chordata; Class: Aves; Order: Charadriiformes; Family: Scolopacidae; Genus: Phalaropus; Genus species: Phalaropus lobatus. Animal characteristics: Head-Body Length: 18 cm; Weight: 40-48 g; Identification: The red-necked phalarope has gray upperparts with a thin white stripe on its wing and a black eye patch. The legs of the red-necked phalarope are long and black. The female in breeding condition has a white throat with a lower red border; Diet: Omnivore: insects, aquatic invertebrates, seeds; Reproduction: Average clutch size is four eggs, which are incubated for 17-21 days before hatching. The chicks fledge at 20 days of age. The male is responsible for incubation; Status: No special status; Interesting Facts: Red-necked phalaropes are unusual among birds in that the female is more brightly colored than the male.
