Le Centre de gravité d'un anneau est en son centre : il est donc en dehors de la matière de l'anneau. De même, le centre de gravité d'un ballon de football est à peu près en son centre. Et le Centre de gravité d'un ballon de rugby ? Et le Centre de gravité du tube sur lequel est enroulé le papier essuie-tout ?
Ce tasseau de bois a son Centre de gravité en son milieu (s'il ne comporte pas de trop gros nœuds).
Ce qui signifie que si l'on enfonce un clou en son milieu, ce tasseau, tenu par ce clou horizontal, sera dans un équilibre indifférent.
Cette pièce de contre-plaqué a une forme triangulaire. Où est son Centre de gravité ? En plaçant un clou dans les différents trous (visibles sur l'image) on peut essayer de déterminer par essais et erreurs la position de ce Centre de gravité : Ce sera la position où le corps, tenu au bout du clou placé horizontalement, se trouve dans un équilibre indifférent...
On remarque dans ce cadre trois objets contre intuitifs : l'objet le plus gros, le rapace, trouve sont équilibre à l'horizontale lorsque son bec est posé sur le bout d'un doigt :
De plus, lorsque l'on appuie sur sa queue, cette queue s'abaisse bien mais l'oiseau reprend sa position horizontale après de multiples oscillations...
L'explication de ce comportement contre intuitif réside dans deux lests (métalliques) placés à l'intérieur des ailes, à leur extrémité. L'extrémité des deux ailes est un peu plus basse que la pointe du bec.
Les deux autres objets contre intuitifs présentent le même comportement.
Ce véhicule à friction comporte un lest placé à l'arrière, dans une position assez haute. De ce fait, lorsqu'il accélère (sous l'effet de son mécanisme à friction) il relève son avant (comme un dragster).
Cet ours funambule fait du vélo sur une cordelette (visible à gauche sur l'image). Où est son Centre de gravité ? Pour que l'ours se tienne verticalement, il faut que le Centre de gravité de cet objet soit en-dessous de la partie basse de sa roue. En simplifiant, on peut dire que le Centre de gravité des deux sphères rouges est en un point situé à égale distance entre ces deux sphères et que le Centre de gravité de l'ensemble de l'objet est un peu au-dessus de ce point , la partie ours de cet objet étant construite de façon assez légère...
À titre pédagogique, on peut reconstituer un ours funambule en Lego...
Au fond, l'ours funambule n'est qu'un téléférique (comme lui, son Centre de gravité se place à sous le fil).
Ces objets décoratifs orientaux en bambou (très fréquents) ont inspiré les objets à gauche de l'image (dont le rapace, par exemple). Ils prennent une position horizontale très contre intuitive lorsqu'on les pose sur leur bec.
Où se trouve le Centre de gravité de deux sphères ? Ici, dans un premier temps, on peut considérer la tige reliant les deux sphères comme non-pesante.
Où se trouve le Centre de gravité d'un homme (ici un super héro) ? On considère généralement que le Centre de gravité d'un homme se situe dans son ventre, derrière son nombril. À titre de conclusion ouvrante, on peut faire remarquer que, dans la technique de saut en hauteur Fosbury, le Centre de gravité du sauteur passe dessous la barre, alors que le sauteur passe dessus...
Il serait facile d'augmenter le poids des deux sphères rouges en remplaçant la matière plastique dont elles sont constituées par un métal. Si l'on ne faisait que doubler le poids de ces deux sphères, elles donneraient la même stabilité à l'ours en étant placées à une hauteur deux fois moindre que les sphères de plastique par rapport au fil sur lequel roule l'ours.
