It reaches up to {{convert|69.1|cm|ft|abbr=on}} in disc width and {{convert|132.5|cm|ft|abbr=on}} in total length.<ref name="iucn status 14 November 2021" /> It is fairly common, but threatened by [[habitat destruction|habitat loss]].<ref name="iucn status 14 November 2021" /> It is part of a group consisting of five [[allopatric]] Amazonian stingrays, the others being ''[[Potamotrygon adamastor|P. adamastor]]'' ([[Uraricoera River]]), ''[[Potamotrygon amazona|P. amazona]]'' ([[Juruá River|Juruá]], [[Jutaí River|Jutaí]] and [[Rio Negro (Amazon)|Rio Negro]]), ''[[Potamotrygon garmani|P. garmani]]'' (mid to upper Tocantins River) and ''[[Potamotrygon limai|P. limai]]'' ([[Jamari River]]).<ref name=Fontenelle2017/> These all have three angular cartilages (as opposed to the one or two seen in other species in the genus).<ref name=Fontenelle2017/>
