==Route description==
From the south,Indiana State Road 23 (SR&nbsp;23) begins about {{convert|2.5|mi|km}} east of the northeastern shore of Bass Lake in [[Starke County, Indiana|Starke County]] at the intersection of [[Indiana State Road 10|State Road 10]] and County Road 900E. From there, it heads north toward [[Grovertown, Indiana|Grovertown]]. In Grovertown, SR&nbsp;23where meetsit intersects [[U.S. Route 30 in Indiana|U.S. RouteUS 30]]. SR&nbsp;23 continues north until [[Walkerton, Indiana|Walkerton]] in the extreme southwestern corner of [[St. Joseph County, Indiana|St. Joseph County]], where it meets [[U.S. Route 6 in Indiana|U.S. RouteUS 6]]. ItAfter a very brief concurrency with that route, SR&nbsp;23 departs town to the north, then quickly turns north-northeast toward [[South Bend, Indiana|South Bend]], passing thoughthrough [[North Liberty, Indiana|North Liberty]]. As Onit enters the south side of South Bend [[metropolitan area]], SR&nbsp;23 has an [[interchange (road)|interchange]] with [[U.S. Route 20 in Indiana|U.S. RouteUS 20]]/[[U.S. Route 31 in Indiana|U.S. RouteUS 31]]/ (the [[St. Joseph Valley Parkway]]). It then passestraverses thoughthe city of South Bend from southwest to northeast, passing very near the southwestcampus of the [[University of Notre Dame]]. After crossing under the [[Indiana Toll Road|Indiana East-West Toll Road (I-80/I-90)]] without providing any access, SR&nbsp;23 parallels that tollway briefly before reaching an intersection with [[Indiana State Road 331|SR 331]], which does provide access to the Toll Road (at its Exit 83).
