African immigrants to Greece have been subject to racism and other forms of discrimination, including being subjected to a disproportionate amount of racial attacks when taking into account their population size. According to a 2015 article by scholar Max Papadantonakis, African immigrants are “marginalized as racialized others” in Greece, with acts of discrimination ranging from being called “mavri” to being "emasculated and ostracized" by Greek society. Many African immigrants in Greece, including those who are second or third-generation Afro-Greeks, report that they are still "seen as Africans" by white Greeks. Following the killing of George Floyd and the subsequent protests around the world, the issue of racism in Greece against Afro-Greeks has gained increased media attention. In the opinion of some Afro-Greeks, the general public in Greece "were finger-pointing at the United States about the way they deal with Black bodies and with Black people, but they don’t really focus, to the extent that we want them to, [on] their self-reflection". Some African immigrants have responded to racial discrimination by educating their children at private, non-Greek educational institutions so they can find economic employment outside of Greece. in 2012, groups of "racist thugs" roamed Athens and other Greek cities, attacked (among other groups) African immigrants they found in the streets.
