A right-handed batsman and right-arm medium-pace bowler, Gie's father, [[Clive Gie|Clive]], played for [[Western Province cricket team|Western Province]], [[Northern Transvaal cricket team|Northern Transvaal]] and [[Natal cricket team|Natal]]. Gie himself made his [[first class cricket]] debut for [[Nottinghamshire CCC|Nottinghamshire]] in 1995 and played sixteen matches, scoring 455 runs at a [[batting average (cricket)|batting average]] of 18.95. He scored three half-centuries, the best of which was 58 [[not out]].
