The mines were regrouped in 1973 into a unit named Kuju colliery after the coal industry's nationalisation, where both underground and opencast mining occurred. However, as of 2017, all underground mines were closed. The Kuju opencast project has a production capacity of 1.30 million tonnes per year, with a quarry life of eight years. The Karma opencast project is expected to have a life of 26 years. Notably, the Kuju Area has been facing issues with illegal mining activities. Central Coalfields Limited provides support for educational facilities for employees' children and operates several medical facilities in the West Bokaro Coalfield.
