| Leader of the [[Viet Minh]], who fought for independence from France in the [[First Indochina War]] and decisively defeated them at the bloody [[Battle of Dien Bien Phu]], resulting in the establishment of an independent [[Democratic Republic of Viet Nam|Democratic Republic of Vietnam]] in the north of the country in 1954. Vietnam would eventually be united under [[Communist Party of Vietnam]] rule after his death with the [[Fall of Saigon]] at the end of the [[Vietnam War]] in 1975.
