From the show's inception until 1996/97, it began at midnight, going straight into [[Auld Lang Syne]] played by the [[Pipes and Drums]] of the [[Scots Guards]]. Since 1997/98, the show has begun before Midnight, nowadays around 11:30pm, with Holland himself inviting the audience and viewers to join in a countdown. It usually lasts around 2 hours, ending at approximately 1:30am.
