As personal photos generally don't get registered at the copyright office, your recompense is limited to a pittance that's not really worth going after. ::You don't have to register copyrights, not in the US. The question as to what you are entitled to is not related to registration. I think they could make a strong fair use claim; a lot of leeway is given to news agencies for purposes of the First Amendment.
