Kanungu District was created by the [[Parliament of Uganda|Sixth Parliament]] of the [[Republic of Uganda]] in July 2001. The district comprises one county with twelve sub-counties of KihiihiKihihi, Kambuga, Nyamirama, Rugyeyo, Rutenga, Kayonza, Mpungu, Kinaaba, Katetete, Nyakinoni, Nyanga, Kanyantorogo,and four Town Councils of [[Kanungu, KihiihiKihihi, Butogota, and KambugaTown Councils]]Kambuga. It is knownthe forlocation of the mass murder/suicidesuicides committed at several sites by the town's [[Movement for the Restoration of the Ten Commandments of God]] cult in 2000. The district has a distributed feeder road network and community access roads. There are three small airstrips at: [[Kayonza Tea Factory]], [[Savannah AirfieldAirstrip]] located atnear [[Savannah Resort HotelKihihi]], and the other[[Ishasha oneRiver isCamp Airport]] in the [[Ishasha Sector]] of [[Queen Elizabeth National Park]].
