Gone With The Wind Original West End Poster

Gone With The Wind is a new musical based on the book of the same name, with lyrics and music by Margaret Martin. It began previews on 5 April 2008 and will officially open at the New London Theatre on 22 April 2008.[1] The show features direction by Trevor Nunn, Sets by John Napier, and costumes by Andreane Neofitu. Darius Danesh and Jill Paice star as Rhett Butler and Scarlet O'Hara respectively.[2]

Plot

The tale is set in the late 19th century Georgia, in the period of the Civil War and the Reconstruction Period that followed. The story centers around the teenage Scarlett on the brink of womanhood, who lives richly on her father's plantation and discovers love in the dashing and dangerous Rhett.

History

American theatrical producer Aldo Scrofani of Columbia Artists Theatricals in New York had been developing the project with director Trevor Nunn and composer / lyricist Margaret Martin for more than three years, along with British producer Colin Ingram.[3] It was always intended for the new adaptation to be based on the book, as opposed to the film[4]. The news was officially announced in 2007[5], although rumours had been circulating for some time. Indeed, David Hasselhoff mentioned in an interview in 2004 that he would greatly desire to play Rhett Butler: "If I could do anything, that would be the dream for me right now."[6] Initial rumours for the lead two roles included Hugh Jackman and Jill PaiceCite error: A <ref> tag is missing the closing </ref> (see the help page).
