    When should we iconify?

{{pp-protected}} and its related templates all feature the |icon parameter. My question is, when should we not use the icon and instead have a bigger template. I usually see the icon on protected templates, but there were one or two instances where I saw the full template displayed rather than the small icon. Latin info

This file   is in Latin. Should it be translated, since this is the English wiki? Legolover26 (talk) 01:58, 24 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

A translation would be best. It would require that somebody makes a new file with some external tool and uploads it. PrimeHunter (talk) 02:20, 24 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
Done. It's at File:Hill sphere of the planets.png. I've replaced the image in Hill sphere with it.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 03:12, 24 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
This question completely confused me because I couldn't see any Latin anywhere. I eventually realised that the image was labelled in French. --ColinFine (talk) 21:56, 24 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
It could be the user actually thought it was Latin, but I have noticed in the past, on occasion, people using "Latin" as a catchall for anything not in English, or "Greek", as in "it's all Greek to me."--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 10:11, 25 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
I thought it was Latin, but I was wrong. It had latin sounding things, like Terre for Earth. But in Latin, Earth is Terra. I was wrong. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Legolover26 (talkcontribs) 15:05, 25 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

Request to perpetuate memory of Dr.Phillipe Pinel,

World Schizophrenia Day is observed on 24th May to pay tributes to this compassionate and courageous psychiatrist who ordered 200 mentally ill persons to be liberated by unchaining them from the government asylum near Paris. Some of them were chained for 30 to 40 years as if they were dangerous wild beasts. So also Dr.Pinel had liberated another 600 women mentally ill from another asylum. He is also known as the Father of Modern Psychiatry not only because of freeing these mentally ill but also because of his research work in the field of mental illness. To pay permanent tribute to this savant, may I suggest you introduce a new verb, TO PINEL, meaning to liberate, to unchain, to be freed from captivity or bondage. English language will be richer by doing this.

I am volunteering for Schizophrenia Awareness Association, Pune, India, for the past 14 years (www.schizophrenia.org.in) and am fully aware that though Dr.Pinel freed the mentally ill from metal chains, even to this day they continue to be bound by ignorance, isolation, discrimination and indignity in all parts of the world.

Thank you in advance for your compliance = Gurudatt Kundapurkar — Preceding unsigned comment added by 114.143.52.168 (talk) 02:45, 24 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

I suspect, based on your question, that you found one of our over 6 million articles and thought we were affiliated in some way with that subject. Please note that you are at Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia that anyone can edit, and this page is for asking questions related to using or contributing to Wikipedia itself. Thus, we have no special knowledge about the subject of your question. You can, however, search our vast catalogue of articles by typing a subject into the search field on the upper right side of your screen. Someone removed the redirect on the article I was editing

I was editing the article class conflict. I first found the article by searching the term "Class Warfare". Now after editing it, when I do the same thing, search class "class warfare" the it no longer redirects me directly to this article. Is there a way to just change the name of the "Class Conflict" article to "Class Warfare"? Or, how can I change the article back to the way it was before where it was automatically presented when one searched the words "Class Warfare", and how do I found out how did this? It's not in the history.--XB70Valyrie (talk) 08:02, 24 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

There is also an article at Class struggle, I'm no expert on the topic but it seems to me the subjects have very large overlaps. Roger (talk) 08:08, 24 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
Keep in mind that titles are case sensitive - Class Warfare and Class warfare are different pages. Roger (talk) 08:15, 24 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
I suspect you typed "Class warefare" or "Class Warefare" (with the "e" in the middle), which unlike those above, do redirect to this article.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 12:15, 24 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
I've been contemplating combining the two articles. A bold edit I just need to find the time for. I think I might have straightened this out by adding a the words and description to the actual list of redirects that appear when you search "class warfare". Thanks. --XB70Valyrie (talk) 02:22, 25 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
Okay, so now I need to know how to delete the Class Struggle article since I've migrated all relevant material from it over to the Class conflict article. Obviously I (with a little help from some friends) need to create a "redirect" to the Class conflict struggle in reference to the Class Struggle article. I'm actually quite proud of the new, bigger, more detailed Class conflict article. I've dolled it up and added photos and everything. I need to find more citations to the Marx sections and intro, but holy cow, my life only moves one minute at a time. --XB70Valyrie (talk) 06:57, 25 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
Hi XB70Valyrie. Obviously what you did was in sterling good faith, but please note for future reference the actions necessary to comply with mandatory copyright attribution when you merge content and otherwise copy content from one Wikipedia page to another. You must note you are merging content and link where you are merging from in the edit summary, e.g., "Merging content from [[article name]]". You did at least indicate to some extent what you were doing, though the name you used, the unlinked Class Struggle with an uppercase "S", is a disambiguation page, while the page with the content you were merging was at Class struggle. I have fixed this with the copyright attribution note seen here. Regarding deletion of Class struggle, the very fact that you have merged content from there means it must never be deleted—its edit history is now the copyright attribution for all the content you merged. However, what I have done is redirect it to class conflict. Please note the copyright attribution edit summary for this other side of the merge that I used upon the redirection (which is also required). I have also done some other things, such as add a hatnote to the article needed because of the merge, change the disambiguation page to make sense in light of the merge and fixed the double redirects that pointed at class struggle, to point at class conflict. Best regards,--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 23:53, 25 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
Wow. That's both a lot of work that you did and a perfect example that I still have lots to learn about the inner-workings and protocol of wikipedia editing. I'll read up on the wikipedia links you cited and become better and better at this every day. Thanks again, I'll wiki the word "barn-star" and review the recommendation process for that. :) --XB70Valyrie (talk) 06:14, 27 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

    Deliberately excessive referencing

An editor added unsourced info to a BLP which someone correctly reverted. The first editor then "retalliated" by returning the material to the page with an excessively large number of cites - with a distinctly peevish edit summary - "sources added - take your pick". Is there a specific guideline about excessive referencing? Roger (talk) 10:54, 24 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

I don't think there's anything against it, the edit is very pointy, but nothing actionable. Wikipedia:Citation overkill has some further reading. I've not got the time to read it myself. Яehevkor 11:21, 24 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

    "Vandalism" needs removed

Hello. I am a teacher at Ohio Connections Academy and to teach my students that Wikipedia is NOT a credible source for Research papers because anyone can edit it I showed them what I mean by adding a few untrue comments onto Wikipedia under the "Ohio Connections Academy" section. I don't ever edit anything on Wikipedia and the only times I have done are for teaching practices. The last time I added an untrue comment onto the "Ohio Connections Academy" section they removed it immediately and I was glad because I didn't mean for it to be left up there for good. I thought that when I put up untrue comments that the Wikipedia staff would find and remove it - in fact, I was counting on it. So I was surprised to learn that my most recent untrue comment is still up. I just tried to edit to remove what I wrote and realize that I must be blocked from editing because of "vandalism." So I just wanted to ask that you remove the comment about "Lisa Hess being an Olympic Gold medalist in Archery" from the "Ohio Connections Academy" section. Also, if there is any way I could have my editing privileges reinstated that would be great, as I promise in the future I will remove my untrue comments as soon as I put them up. Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Klunt (talkcontribs) 12:52, 24 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

You're totally missing the point that you are not allowed to vandalize WP for any purposes whatsoever. If you are genuinely interested in using WP as a teaching tool there are properly organised programs for doing so - WP:School and university projects. Roger (talk) 13:00, 24 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
(edit conflict) I have removed your edit. Claiming that you will "remove my untrue edits as soon as I put them up" is perhaps the worst unblock request I've seen to date; effectively you're asking us to unblock you so that you can continue to vandalise the encyclopedia. The motivation for your vandalism is irrelevant; you are here to deliberately disrupt the work of other editors, and removing your editing privileges is the appropriate response. Yunshui  13:06, 24 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
Actually this "editor" is not currently blocked - but probably should be. Roger (talk) 13:09, 24 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
Noted, and agreed. I'm watchlisting their talkpage - if another warning pops up, I shall log an AIV report. In the meantime, Klunt, please either use your account to edit constructively, or don't edit at all. Yunshui  13:11, 24 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

Klunt, you misunderstand how Wikipedia works at such a fundamental level that I'm disturbed you feel qualified to teach your students about it. "Wikipedia staff" (actually Wikimedia Foundation staff) number 75; articles on the various language Wikipedias number 22 million. So vandalism is not repaired by paid staffers, but by ordinary volunteers around the world who donate their free time to helping maintain Wikipedia. Many such volunteers are educators; I myself teach at university. If you don't want your students citing Wikipedia (as I don't) you need only point them toward Wikipedia's own advice available by clicking "Cite this page" from the toolbox on the left hand side of any article. You might also tell the students about, for example, the Wikipedia biography controversy or the Essjay controversy.
There should be nothing stopping you from editing that article or any other as long as you are logged in; I would guess you were unable to edit before because you weren't logged in and were trying to edit from an IP address with a history of vandalism. Adrian J. Hunter(talkcontribs) 13:15, 24 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
How about actually doing something constructive on WP as a class project instead of vandalising? There are a whole universe of articles that need to be written. There is so much that your class (and you) can learn with such a project. Instead of simply bleating on about how vandalism makes WP unreliable - and then making the problem even worse by vandalising it yourself - you can teach your class many useful skills; how to properly research a topic, how to identify reliable sources and then use them to write a good article with a proper structure, references, etc. These are skills they will find very useful as they go further in their academic careers - and even after in their professions. Please see WP:School and university projects for guidance on how to get started. Roger (talk) 14:21, 24 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
See also Wikipedia:Citing Wikipedia#A caution before citing Wikipedia and Wikipedia:Researching with Wikipedia. Don't vandalize Wikipedia and please don't teach your students how to do it, which is probably how some of them will view your irresponsible lesson. PrimeHunter (talk) 19:55, 24 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

How to deal with trolls on wikipedia

Assume that an editor with more than 50000 edits, who's indefinitely blocked due to "trolling" last year, is requesting an unblock. And he claimed that he has contributed a lot so far, and it will be no harm to unblock him; if not, it'll certainly be a loss to wikipedia. However he doesn't admit that he did any thing wrong last year.

So just curious about how admins here would deal with this on enwiki. Or, any similar cases before? Thanks.--Jsjsjs1111 (talk) 13:51, 24 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

    Hughes Hotel

Looking up the History of Fresno, Calif. the file showed so much on key items that Fresno is known for in History. One of the biggest item that was not listed is the "Hughes Hotel" that was on the corner of Tulare and Broadway. It was a very History Labeled Building. It had the first electric lights in Fresno. It was one of the most beautiful buildings that I have ever been in. It was built in the mid to end of 1800's. But in 1953, I believe it was, an arsonist went around Fresno and started fires all over town. Mainly the downtown area and businesses. Why I can not remember but it was a very hot,hot day and the fires were being lit one after another. They did catch him and he was sentenced. That part escapes me but the history is there and many building that were very Historical to Fresno were lost or badly damaged. You should put that down in the history of Fresno. I remember riding the last steam train leaving Fresno going South to LA. and watching it circle around the mountain going over the ridge route and going through the tunnels thru the mountains. Bring those items up. To me Fresno has lost alot of history by the way it is being run. At 65 and not of the computer rules history age, if history has not being written down in real ink, not just posted on computers, the world is going to be lost.

    Dear Sir or Madam,

I would want to report the problem with the page "Ashraf Al Hajuj". The page is with false and inadequate content about a living person and should be removed in accordance with Wikipedia regulations. The gossip columns are not a source of the trustful information. All our attempts to make appropriate corrections (i.e. in the date of birth even) are met with aggression and are immediately labeled "vandalism". Also I would want to report the problem with the user "Nadine" who apparently is very incompetent and narrow-minded, allows herself to insult people and believes any other person is wrong if he/she doesn't share her opinion. We contacted the Interpol to advise us on this issue. They advised us to contact you first to see if there is any possibility to resolve the conflict peacefully and just to delete the nonsense that was written. Also we would like to ask you for cooperation in giving the contact details of the persons who are behind creating this page full with false and insulting information. In case we do not receive any response from your side, we wll proceed with legal actions.

I hope to have informed you sufficiently.

Can a private business be included in Wikipedia?

I am editor of Tank Transport Trader magazine, a 30-year-old monthly magazine that is the leading trade journal for those in the tank-truck industry. Would a small overview (biography)of our company meet criteria for inclusion in Wikipedia? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.116.126.233 (talk) 19:10, 24 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

The main criteria are notability (more specifically the company notability criteria) and whether you have sufficient independent reliable sources. The size of the company as such is not relevant. So the basic issue is, have other publications written articles about your magazine? Roger (talk) 19:24, 24 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
Also take a look at WP:COI to avoid some of the pitfalls regarding conflict of interest if you or someone closely affiliated with your business writes the article. Cresix (talk) 19:29, 24 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
A quick look at Google came up with only your own website (tanktransport.com) and a multitude of directory listings (which prove nothing more than existence). No in-depth coverage of your company/magazine by independent sources, so unless you can pull the proverbial rabbit out of a hat and find a source that Google can't, it doesn't look like the article would pass the notability requirement. Roger (talk) 19:37, 24 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
    Wikipedia:FAQ/Organizations covers all of that and more. ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 19:46, 24 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
To put it simply as possible for the OP: It doesn't matter what a thing is, what matters is what information is availible about that thing. If there is a sufficient amount of information in truly independent (i.e. not written by the subject itself) and reliable sources, then there should be an article about that thing. If, however, all that exists is trivial writing (very little depth of content) or all of the writing is by the thing itself (i.e. on the company's own website), then Wikipedia shouldn't have an article about it. --Jayron32 19:48, 24 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

Just a note, you moved the article to Wikipedia space at WP:Jim Suhler, rather then article space. I moved it there, to Jim Suhler for you, and removed the sandbox template. It should now appear in searches. Otherwise, I don't see any other technical issues. I don't see any critical issues, though I'd suggest categorizing the article, looking for places where the article should be wiki linked from, and adding more references for the information contained in it. What's different about the "My sandbox" link?

At the top of every page, I have these links: RudoldRed (my user page), My talk, My sandbox, My preferences, My Watchlist, My Contributions, Log out. I've noticed that whenever I open any Wikipedia page, all of the links show up together as the page starts to load, except for My sandbox. The My sandbox shows up a bit later, pushing my userpage link and My talk over to the left as it does. So, what's different about the "My sandbox" link? Why does it not show up at the same time as all of the other links at the top of the page? RudolfRed (talk) 04:23, 25 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

The account Ahmeronline (not AhmerOnline) was created on 6 March 2008, and made just one edit, to Osmania University, the same day. You appear to have registered an email address (at any rate, Wikipedia will let me email that user), but if you no longer have access to that email address then there is no way that you can reset the password for it. It may be possible for you to usurp the account name, but I don't think so: I am not very familiar with the rules for this, though, so I may be wrong. --ColinFine (talk) 10:30, 25 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

    Regarding CSD

If I move a page to another one and want to request deletion of the original page, can I do it under G6 (housekeeping)?? If not, can I do it under any other criteria of CSD?? Roshan220195 (talk) 08:57, 25 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

You could, I suppose, but why bother? Redirects are cheap. Yunshui  09:12, 25 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
The move page does have the option not to create a redirect, but having created one R3 or G7 would be options if it's not a credible spelling. - David Biddulph (talk) 09:40, 25 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
Only administrators have the option to not leave a redirect behind when moving a page. PrimeHunter (talk) 10:24, 25 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
(e/c) Yes, you could use G6 for redirects unambiguously created in error or in the incorrect namespace. It also is commonly used (and is the criterion automatically supplied) when a redirect is deleted by an administrator when moving a page title to an existing redirect. You could also use CSD R2 for redirects created when you moved a page from the mainspace to another namespace. Until just a few days ago CSD R3, which covers implausible typos and misnomers, could have been used but an exception was made to exclude the criterion from redirects created by moves. There are others that more generically apply but would be rarer, such as using G10 for a redirect that is an attack (we do see this) and relatedly, G3 for obvious vandalism. G1 (patent nonsense) could be relevant at times, G7 as well (creator requests). Hell, G11 (blatant advertising) could even be used, e.g., for a page moved from a page that was titled "business name is the greatest store of all time..."--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 09:54, 25 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

There are many forks of Wikipedia, some more serious than others. There are thousands of Wikis which use the same Mediawiki software, and so often have a similar appearance to Wikipeida. The licence under which Wikipedia content is released allows derivative works, providing their origin is acknowledged.
However, I'm not sure if the various garbled mentions of Wikipedia do constitute attribution, and the line "Mickopedia® is a registered trademark of the Wikimedia Foundation, Inc., a feckin' non-profit organization." is certainly somewhat dubious. --ColinFine (talk) 10:36, 25 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

    RALPH SAMPSON WIKIPEDIA PAGE

I have been trying since 2010 to have the current image of former NBA player Ralph Sampson (full disclosure: I run his foundation & am engaged to him) removed to no avail. I am a little surprised that the current image would be allowed to use for his page, it is a horrible image & the person that posted it should have known better. There are 100's of images of him that depict him in a much more appropriate image that could have been used, this is really not fair to him or his legacy. Also, when you google his name the wikipedia page shows on the google site as married, he's been divorced for almost 15 yrs now; I am not sure where to find that in order to remove it. Finally, I've uploaded some images of him and sent some images to the support desk on yesterday, any help that anyone can do to assist me with this would be greatly appreciated. He is going into the Hall of Fame in September and would like very much for this image to be removed so that when others google him they don't see this...unfortunately, this is what happens when you try to be nice and allow others to take photos of you when you're out in a park living your life but not expecting that they would post to twitter and then it be used as his monicker. Thanks so much for any help or assistance that can be given...

As you are associated with him, it should not really be for you to say what is an appropriate image. But I can easily believe that better images exist. If you have uploaded such images to English Wikipedia or to Wikimedia Commons, with the required copyright permissions, please say where they are, and I or another editor will replace the current scowling one.
I have also added a statement "He was divorced in 2003, and has remarried", with a reference. From what you say, there is more to it than that. So a reference to an independent source, giving his current marital status, would be useful. Maproom (talk) 15:58, 25 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

If you're talking about the little bio that pops up when you Google Sampson's name (the one that says, "Spouse: Aleize Sampson"), I'm not sure there's anything we can actually do to remove the "Spouse" line. That specific part doesn't seem to be derived from the wiki page, since that name hasn't been mentioned there at any point in the recent past. I'm not sure how Google put that together. IMHO, the newly uploaded images are hideous. If that's all that are available, the one that was previously in the article should be restored. Cresix (talk) 03:21, 26 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

Someone with some Imaging knowledge needs to assist this new user in her earnest efforts to improve the image @ Ralph Sampson. It would be appreciated if that someone would visit User talk:Houston50 and hold her hand during this process. I welcomed her a few days ago and she then reached out to me via email asking for help. But I have ZERO knowledge about Images and what she needs to do to accomplish her simple goal. BTW....there is no need to refer to her images (if they are her images) as hideous. This is the help desk...the last place where attacks should be used as a communicative method. Thanks to whomever chooses to be her hero. ```Buster Seven Talk 05:09, 27 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
I advised her on her :en talkpage to take a look at her Commons talkpage and to use it for communication about her image/upload problems. When the problems on this level are solved, there will eventually be a choice of several images of Mr. Sampson, which would then enable local editors to pick best or the most fitting. However, her as-of-yet 2 successful uploads of Sampson shots to Commons don't really look like an improvement. --Túrelio (talk) 13:42, 27 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

    Middle East Countires

Back in College I remember in my Geography Book there were only 5 countries of Middle East (Israel, Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq and Syria). Iran and Turkey were part of Empire States and the rest of the Arab countries were part of Arabian Peninsula. Did this change? is Wikipedia and the media wrong? It depends on what qualifications are used to include a country in the Middle East. I do not consider India to Libya in the Middle East. I think that the countries that should be included are Turkey, Armenia, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait,Saudi Arabia, Oman, Yemen, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, Israel, Syria, Lebanon, and Jordan. Legolover26 (talk) 15:25, 25 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

Finding the image through Google Images does not guarantee that it is free to use. Maproom (talk) 18:26, 25 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
A very rough-and-ready guide: it is probably suitable for inclusion on Wikipedia if a) you produced the work yourself (and not on behalf of an employer etc.) or b) the photo was produced before 1923. Anything else gets a little hairier. I'd suggest that the vast majority of images on Google Image Search are still in copyright and therefore unsuitable for Wikipedia's purposes. But before you move an article, have a scan of WP:TITLE to make sure you're following the guidelines there. There are two primary Wikipedia policies/guidelines involved here, regardless of how factual your edits are: WP:COI and WP:V. You should read each of these carefully. Editors who are affiliated with a subject are strongly encouraged to post their information on an article's talk page so that uninvolved editors can decide what is the most appropriate edits to make. You are quite welcome to discuss any changes on the talk page. As for accuracy, "The threshold for inclusion is Wikipedia is verifiability, not truth". No one, including an administrator, can change these policies/guidelines without the consensus of the Wikipedia community. You can save yourself a lot of headaches if you suggest your changes on the article's talk page. Cresix (talk) 22:04, 25 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

Replying to your technical question: it is usual to edit an existing article in place, not in your sandbox. If an article needs a complete rewrite then you might work in a sandbox, and in that case you would need to copy and paste from your sandbox (from an edit box on it, not from the displayed text): but I wouldn't do that without getting consensus on the talk page first. However, as others have said, in this case your best course is to suggest the changes you want on the talk page. --ColinFine (talk) 09:33, 26 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

It would be better if you put your information on the article's talk page, and let other people update the page accordingly. Maproom (talk) 21:15, 25 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

Wow what a mess of misformatting! Firstly, never start a new line with a space, then take a good look at WP:Referencing for beginners because none of your references are correctly formatted. Inline extrermal links are also frowned upon, see WP:ELNO. But the biggest concern about your addition is actually not its layout, the content is highly promotional, which is not allowed - please see WP:ADVERT. Roger (talk) 09:36, 26 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
If for some reason you are unable to edit the article, the best place to discuss what you want to change on the article's talk page, here Talk:Internet television. But take note of what Roger has said: if you look at what you've posted here, you'll see that it's very hard to read because of your formatting. --ColinFine (talk) 09:43, 26 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

    Removing alphabetic subheadings in categories.

Category:Paralympic competitors by disability category contains only six items and won't get any more as those six are the only ones that exist. Having alphabetic subheadings in categories with so few entries is pointless, is there an easy way to eliminate them? Roger (talk) 10:49, 26 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

Not by editing the category itself. Each subcategory could be given a sort key starting with the same character, for example [[Category:Paralympic competitors by disability category|*Amputee]] and so on. PrimeHunter (talk) 12:25, 26 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

    Thine Antique Pen

Thine Antique Pen has done the following. I am not complaining BTW, neither am I making personal attacks. I just want this to stop:

    1. He made a sub-page full of my mistakes here[3], which soon got deleted.
    2. I made a delete comment at I am learning [4] in which he said "It's more notable than MyMaths, in my sight". And 2 mins late the MyMaths get's nominated for deletion and the result was "speedy keep".
    3. Thus the continued arguments I gave hime the following rules.

"Here is what you need to do:

    • Stop visiting my talk page
    • Don't comment on me anywhere on this wiki
    • Don't critisize and attack me like you did on sunday
    • I will not do the same to you
    • This is to prevent further disruption and accusations-I personally don't want an intervention ban.--Deathlaser : Chat 16:05, 22 May 2012 (UTC)"

Yet he keeps breaching these rules-I really don't see what's so unfair about them that they need to be breached.--Deathlaser :  Chat  13:52, 26 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

I see that TAP intentionally nominated MyMaths for AfD which is not a good practice and thus discouraged. If not intentionally then no problem (but it looks like it was intented) Anyways if you feel that he is bothering you, ask for interaction ban from him. →TSU tp* 14:11, 26 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
Corrections: I don't see what that subpage had to do with your mistakes, but OK. Also, "giving" someone rules isn't the best way to phrase it, but OK. And the AfD was closed per SNOW, not as a Speedy Keep, but OK. The last sentence should read something like "I will extend the same courtesy to you", but OK. The spirit of this request should be granted, and I have asked Thine Antique Pen to do so. Otherwise we'll have to ask for an interaction ban. Thank you, Drmies (talk) 15:43, 26 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, okay! However, I do not look at the article creator when I patrol new pages, or CSD/PROD/AFD them, so if one is Deathlasers, give me a ping on my talk page! --Thine Antique Pen (talkcontributions) 15:59, 26 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, but that page was already two days old when you got to it. Regardless, just make sure to check the history, and when you notify (whether that's done automatically or not) you will see who created it. This little bit of extra care is worthwhile. Thanks, Drmies (talk) 16:12, 26 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

How get the attention of confirmed editor?

I posted a one line edit with a reference to an image at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_eclipse_of_May_20,_2012#Photo_Gallery. I don't see a user with your name at Commons, did you use a different name? --SPhilbrick(Talk) 14:24, 26 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
I'm looking at recent uploads at Commons, not seeing an eclipse, but I'm searching through just the last few minutes. Do you know what time you uploaded it, or did you add a category?--SPhilbrick(Talk) 14:26, 26 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
You uploaded the image with quotes around the title, including the file extension. I'm sure that's not what you intended but it is at File:"Annular Eclipse Nevada City CA May 2012.jpg".jpg. I will make a move request to a proper title at the Commons. In the meantime, I have fixed the image name in the article.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 17:07, 26 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

Sorry I mucked up the filenames. I think I saw the quotes around a filename in an example for the upload and I assumed it worked like UNIX filenames on a terminal. I judge from the note on the Commons page ("This request will be dealt with by an administrator or filemover.") that I should do nothing. I'm sure that is the best way to avoid breaking it.Gpalmernc (talk) 20:37, 26 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

    Backgrounds in Infoboxes

Hi. I am confused about how to make a background color for a certain section in an infobox. For example, (and this is just an example), look at the "Background Information" section on Lil Wayne's infobox. The background is gold. I have no idea how to do that, and that's what I'm asking.

Sometimes when you get an error, it may go through credited to the IP address, so you should check the page's 'View history' file. If it does not appear there or on your user contributions Special:Contributions/Paterimon, then it is gone. I frequently copy or cut-and-paste large revisions to a thumb drive or computer file to avoid this loss, especially when an error has already been mentioned here, or an error has already come up for me. Purpose of a page?

What is the point of Template:Template sandbox? How is that page intended to be used and how is it different from WP:Sandbox? -- Toshio Yamaguchi (tlkctb) 00:21, 27 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

According to the talk page, that page is for for experimenting with templates, where the other sandbox page is for experimenting with editing a normal page. RudolfRed (talk) 00:36, 27 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
One can already experiment with templates in the regular sandbox. I mean, I can create template markup in the regular sandbox. Apart from that, for the purpose of editing a page, I doesn't really matter in which namespace a page is, a page in the template namespace is edited the same way as a page in the main namespace, Wikipedia namespace or any other namespace. Or is that page intended to be transcluded or substituted onto another page itself? I don't get it. -- Toshio Yamaguchi (tlkctb) 00:44, 27 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
If you prefer WP:Sandbox or a personal sandbox then just use that. I could quickly think of three potential advantages of Template:Template sandbox. 1) It's overwritten less frequently so you get more time to test transclusion of your code and may easier find it later in the page history. 2) You can transclude it with {{Template sandbox}} like normal templates without having to know how transclusion of other namespaces work (it's a small difference but lots of users don't know it). 3) It's in the template namespace so {{NAMESPACE}} and similar returns the same as if you later use the same code in another template. {{NAMESPACE}} might be used indirectly via a template without a user realising it and it could be quite confusing to some if a test in WP:Sandbox worked differently when the code was copied to a template. See also Wikipedia:Templates for deletion/Log/Not deleted/July 2005#Template:Template sandbox (and others). PrimeHunter (talk) 01:27, 27 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
Okay, yes, that all makes sense. Thanks. -- Toshio Yamaguchi (tlkctb) 01:44, 27 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

    Terrence Deacon's page vandalized

The Wikipedia page about Professor Terrence Deacon (URL = http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terrence_Deacon) has been vandalized. Probably by a person (Michael Lissack) who has been systematically attempting to defame him in every possible venue. He appears to have placed self-serving and defaming information about Deacon on the Wikipedia page about him, specifically concerning his 2011 book "Incomplete Nature." To correct this vandalism his modifications should be removed and to prevent further vandalism Mr. Lissack should be blocked from making any edits to this page in the future. The other person who may also attempt to vandalize this page (Alecia Juarrero) is mentioned by Mr. Lissack in his edit. She may also attempt a similar self-serving vandalism so her ability to edit this page should also be blocked. 05:03, 27 May 2012 (UTC)76.206.196.80 (talk)
