Lydia Janssen is an American dancer turned artist known for her abstract expressionist paintings of self-discovery.[1][2]

Early life and education

Born in Lansing, Michigan in 1976, Lydia Janssen received a BA from Sarah Lawrence College, Bronxville, NY in 1998. She is also spent a year at the University of Massachusetts, Fine Arts Department, Amherst, MA (2004-2005). She then attended the Art Students League of New York, NY (2005-2007).

She danced at the Merce Cunningham Studio School, performing with modern dance troupes Pam Tanowitz Dance Company and Jordana Toback/POON Dance Company.[3] Janssen suffered life-altering injuries which left her permanently unable to dance and that ended her dancing career.[4]

Arts

After her dance career ended as a result of the injury she suffered, Janssen started a career as an artist spending a year in the Graduate Fine Arts Department at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, before returning to New York to study at the Art Students League between 2005 and 2007 under Larry Poons and Ronnie Landfield.[4]

Janssen paintings reflect her observation of how movement is achieved within confined spaces.[5] Many of her paintings are held in private collections (including notable collector Seow Chuan Koh), and have been exhibited at several art fairs and gallery exhibits throughout the United States, Hong Kong and Singapore.[6][7] She is represented by the Susan Eley Fine Art Gallery in New York City and REDSEA Gallery in Singapore.[8]
