Request to take part in a survey

I am Piotr Konieczny, a fellow Wikipedian (User:Piotrus) and a researcher of Wikipedia (http://scholar.google.com/citations?user=gdV8_AEAAAAJ). I am currently (in collaboration with WMF) embarking on a project trying to understand why the most active Wikipedia contributors (such as yourself) may reduce their activity, or retire. We have a growing understanding of why an average editor may do so (see http://strategy.wikimedia.org/wiki/Former_Contributors_Survey_Results), but we have a very limited understanding of why the top editors would limit their contributions. Yet it is the top editors like yourself who contribute most of Wikiepdia's content, thus understanding this is of vital concern to Wikipedia's project future.

I am contacting you because you are among the top Wikipediana by number of edits, yet your editing activity shows a decline. I would very much appreciate if you would take a minute and answer the following four short questions. Please note this is not a mass email; I am contacting only few dozen of editors like yourself, and each response is extremely valuable. Your response will not be made public, and your privacy will be fully respected.

If you would like to help out in this project and take part in a very short survey, please send me a wikiemail, so that I can send you an email with the survey questions. --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 12:28, 20 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Million Awards

  The Million Award
For your contributions to bring Earth (estimated annual readership: 2,632,000) and Jupiter (estimated annual readership: 1,762,000) to Featured Article status, I hereby present you the Million Award. Congratulations on this rare accomplishment--very few editors have earned one of these, much less two-- and thanks for all you do for Wikipedia's readers. -- Khazar2 (talk) 03:13, 28 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

The Million Award is a new initiative to recognize the editors of Wikipedia's most-read content; you can read more about the award and its possible tiers (Quarter Million Award, Half Million Award, and Million Award) at Wikipedia:Million Award. You're also welcome to display this userbox:

This editor won the Million Award for bringing Earth to Featured Article status.
This editor won the Million Award for bringing Jupiter to Featured Article status.

If I've made any error in this listing, please don't hesitate to correct it; if for any reason you don't feel you deserve it, please don't hesitate to remove it; if you know of any other editor who merits one of these awards, please don't hesitate to give it; if you yourself deserve another award from any of the three tiers, please don't hesitate to take it!

I'm sorry to see you've decided to retire, but whether you someday choose to return or not, thanks for the millions of readers your work has helped, and will continue to help. Cheers and all best, -- Khazar2 (talk) 03:13, 28 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

Proposed deletion of Jason Novak

The article Jason Novak has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

This person doesn't appear to be notable outside of their band, so it's not clear that a separate article is justified. (And this article contains no information that isn't already present in Acumen Nation).

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. More reasons to keep

Hello RJHall, long time ago you have expressed your views on Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/List_of_dictators. Now I have improved the related articles and lists with systematic findings based on published reliable sources from history and political science. However, two of them are currently submitted to Afds (by a Chinese Wikipedian who in the past has personally attacked me for my contribution to politics-related articles in Chinese Wikipedia). Your comments are welcome and appreciated: (1) Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/List_of_dictatorships (2)Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/List_of_modern_dictators_in_Latin_America. Thanks folks

Thank you for all your kind words.

The reason I departed is that I had just grown too frustrated about having to interact with hard-headed individuals regarding the minutia of page content and layout. I'd spent much time getting pages just so--exactly according to the MoS, only to have it switched around with useful information removed. Rather than spending endless time futilely battling over such details and engaging in what proved to be pointless debates, I retired.

Anyway, I've said my piece. At present I have a new and much more rewarding hobby in 3D modeling, so rarely spend time here any more. Wikipedia remains a useful source of information though, and for that I'm thankful. Good luck with your projects, and may you have more patience with narrow-minded people than I did. RJH (talk) 02:47, 5 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

Wow that sounds fun - good luck with the hobby! Been buffing astronomy articles in your absence.....but take care of yourself. Leisure time is too valuable to waste if not unwinding and enjoying....Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 04:27, 5 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
3D modeling is awesome; I've used Autodesk Maya in the past to make some cool stuff and it's always been fun... I'd say the reason I contribute here is because I find it to be a more productive and more rewarding use of my free time than watching random YouTube videos and the like, but if it ever stopped becoming fun, I wouldn't think twice about quitting. You gotta enjoy life! StringTheory11 (t • c) 15:22, 5 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

ArbCom elections are now open!

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Additionally, a 2007 UN pdf document indicates CU as Cuba's code, and not C. Any ideas where you got these infos?
