Wikipedia:WikiProject Albums/Certifications
This Wikipedia page has been superseded by List of music recording sales certifications and is retained primarily for historical reference. |
An album that achieves a certain amount of sales within a country receives an award in the form of a certification. For example, if an album makes over "a" sales within a certain country, it can be "certified gold". If it then makes over "b" sales, it can be certified platinum. IF it makes "2b" sales, it is certified 2 times or 2x platinum.
Record labels give information about sales within each country to each country's national record industry association (NRIA). The NRIA then awards certifications to an artist's album if it goes over a set number of sales. These certifications can then be used as an artists and/or record company's bragging rights to their success.
The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) is the international organization that represents the interests of the recording industry worldwide. It represents more than 1,450 record companies in 75 different countries, and therefore acts as the national record industry association for those countries. It also recognizes 48 affiliate NRIA's.
This table is an attempt to make a centralized source of information pertaining to album certifications. This includes the country, the national record industry association for that country, a website (and any necessary navigation instructions that appear in a footnote), and the required domestic sales to reach each certification award level. These are only for full length albums; future work will include DVD certifications, and single certifications will be made a part of Wikiproject songs.
You may note that the table is incomplete. This may be because:
- The website is down,
- There is not a database available online to the public, or
- There is not an online database that can be found (most likely because it is in a foreign language).
If you have found a reliable source for a country's certifications and there is not one on this table yet, please be bold and add it, so others can use it.
If you have any questions or queries, please leave them on the talk page.

Footnotes
edit- ^ According to the IFPI
- ^ These numbers are taken from IFPI.org/certification-award-levels.pdf
- ^ Scroll down until you see a drop-down list with "Año" beside it. Choose a year, click the "BUSCAR" button, and manually search.
- ^ Click "Gold & Platin" in the left column, type the artist's name into the top field ("Interpret"), and then click the "Suchen" button.
- ^ Choose a week from the dropdown list just above the table, click go, and manually scan.
- ^ Type artist name in "Artista". You can optionally select CD or DVD format, the certification, the year, and the label, respectively, in the drop-down lists. Then click "BUSCAR" to search.
- ^ Under "Guld og platin" in the left column, select and manually scan 2004, 2005 and/or 2006.
- ^ Go to "Charts & Gold / Platin" and "Suche in Datenbank".
- ^ Manually scan through the table. Also check the links to albums certified in 2000-2006, links are just above the table on the right. Under the "Minősítés" column, circles = Gold certification, triangles = Platinum certification. The "db" column displays how many times it has been certified. (ie. a triangle with a 2 beside it is 2x Platinum)
- ^ Select a category and manually scan. (The IRMA says it is still working on more previous years)
- ^ As indicated on RIAJ.or.jp, no online database exists, but album certifications "are announced once a month through industry magazines, websites and such.".
- ^ These certification requirements have undergone changes in the past decade. Before 1999, 100,000 sales we're required for gold certifications. That requirement dropped to 75,000 between 1999 and July 2003. Anything after July 2003 has the current requirement of 50,000.
- ^ These certification requirements have undergone changes as well. Before 1999, 250,000 sales we're required for platinum certifications. That requirement dropped to 150,000 between 1999 and July 2003. Anything after July 2003 currently has a requirement of 100,000.
- ^ These certification requirements have also undergone changes. The diamond requirement before 2000 was 1,000,000 sales. 2000 and after currently stands at 500,000.
- ^ Type artist's name in the "Artiest" field, fill out any optional fields and click "ZOEK".
- ^ Browse through the charts, located in the left drop down list.
- ^ You can type the artist name in the "Søk artist i trofélister" field and press the "Søk" button. Alternatively, the drop down list under "Søk troféer på år" is a bunch of years. Select one, click the "Søk" button, and manually scan. ("Gull" = Gold, 1xP = 1x Platinum etc.)
