The '''Elsie Inglis Memorial Hospital''' (officially '''Elsie Inglis Memorial Maternity Hospital''') was a hospital in [[Abbeyhill]], [[Edinburgh]], Scotland, and was founded in 1925 as a memorial to [[Elsie Inglis]]. Backing onto [[Holyrood Park]] just east of [[Holyrood House]], it was well liked for its intimate atmosphere by mothers who often referred to it as "Elsie's". Nevertheless the cost of supporting a relatively small hospital led to its closure in 1988. Maternity cover was transferred to the Eastern General Hospital which itself closed a few years later. All Edinburgh hospital births are now handled by the [[Edinburgh Royal Infirmary]].

After a few years, a nursing home was built on the site, reusing some hospital buildings and retaining the name of Elsie Inglis. In the 1990s a major part of the hospital was demolished with a small part refurbished into a nursery. The nursery and nursing home are now joined by new housing developments on the site.

The Elsie Inglis Memorial Maternity Hospital was a maternity hospital in Holyrood, Edinburgh, Scotland.[1][2]

History

The hospital was established with surplus funds arising from disbandment of the Scottish Women's Hospitals for Foreign Service, an organisation which had been formed by Elsie Inglis and which had sent hospital units to France, Serbia, Russia, Corsica and Greece during the First World War.[3] The 20-bed hospital opened in July 1925.[3][4] The hospital joined the National Health Service in 1948 and was directly managed by the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh.[3] After services transferred to the Eastern General Hospital, despite public protests about the proposed closure, the facility closed in 1988.[3] Following assurances that another maternity unit in the city would be named after Inglis, one journalist suggested renaming the Royal Hospital for Children and Young People after her.[5]
