The first two films in the franchise were co-written/co-directed by Lucas and Moore. The plot centers around a group of friends who decide as mothers to go on strike and taking a break from parenting to have time devoted to themselves, after feeling underappreciated by their respective families. Their adventures generally include wild and careless behavior, resulting in comical situations.

The franchise will continue with additional films, and a potential reality television adaptation in development.

Development

Bad Moms was received successfully both commercially as well as financially. Following the positive reception, in October 2016, STX Entertainment announced plans to develop the movie into a franchise. The studio officially stated:

"STX has chosen to focus on extending consumer passion for the Bad Moms brand with a series of film spinoffs, a reality television show, short-form digital content, and a robust consumer products program."

Following the report, the production studio continued development on various projects.[1][2] By October 2017, following the release of A Bad Mom's Christmas, the filmmakers acknowledged discussions for additional holiday-themed installments in the franchise.[3]

Bad Moms

Amy has a great husband, overachieving children, a beautiful home, and a successful career. Unfortunately, she's also overworked, exhausted, and ready to snap. Fed up with her responsibilities, she decides to join her two friends, who are also stressed-out mothers, to take a break from daily life and conventional motherhood. As the women find themselves in wild activities with their emancipated freedom, they find that they are in competition with PTA leader Gwendolyn and her group of seemingly perfect moms. The trio soon discover that their adventures in celebrant behavior, may not be all that they hoped it would be.[5]

A Bad Moms Christmas

Main article: A Bad Moms Christmas

Under-appreciated and overburdened moms Amy, Kiki, and Carla decide to rebel against and abandon the expectations, challenges and to-do lists of the "Super Bowl for moms": Christmas. With the pressures of creating the perfect holiday events for their families mounting, the trio have to get their act together while hosting and entertaining their own respective mothers who come to visit for the holidays.[6]

Future

In October 2016, Jon Lucas and Scott Moore announced the studio's plans to expand the property into a franchise including various installments. The filmmaking duo stated that they intend to potentially make up to ten Bad Moms movies.[7] By October 2017, Lucas and Moore further expressed interest in additional sequel films following the release of A Bad Moms Christmas. The filmmakers stated that they have plans to feature the titular mothers, in various holiday occasions.[8]

Bad Moms' Moms (TBA)

In April 2019, a follow-up spin-off movie to A Bad Mom Christmas was announced to officially be in development at STX Entertainment. Titled Bad Moms' Moms, the film will star Christine Baranski, Susan Sarandon, and Cheryl Hines reprising their roles as the mothers of the eponymous Bad Moms. Susanne Todd will serve as producer, continuing her creative role with the previous two movies.[9] STX Films chief Adam Fogelson announced that the film will be entirely different from the first two movies, and stated that the project will have "all sorts of great talent".[10]

In June 2021, Susan Sarandon confirmed that the project was delayed as a result of the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic, and that script is in the process of being written.[11]

Bad Dads (TBA)

In October 2016, a spin-off featuring a similar premise, with a gender-swap focus on dads was confirmed to be in development with the title Bad Dads.[2] The film was scheduled for a release date of July 14, 2017, though its development was delayed in favor of A Bad Mom Christmas, followed by the studio's decision to prioritize the development of Bad Moms' Moms.[12]

Television

Reality

In February of 2018, an unscripted reality series based on the film series was in development. The docuseries will be a joint-venture with Fox Broadcasting Company and STX Entertainment with Jason Goldberg, STX Chief Creative Officer, serving as executive producer.[13] The show's development came into question in 2019, during the purchase merger of 21st Century Fox by The Walt Disney Company. The Fox Corporation was established to maintain the assets which were not purchased including the television company Fox Broadcasting Company (FOX), with the network acquiring the projects in development from the studios involved.[14][15][16]

Sitcom

In August 2023, it was announced that a Bad Moms television show was in development. The series will be jointly produced by Lionsgate Television and STXfilms Television.[17][18]

Bad Moms received mixed reviews from critics, but proved a financial success after grossing over $183 million worldwide, becoming the first film from STX Entertainment to gross $100 million domestically. A Bad Moms Christmas likewise received mixed reviews, with criticism regarding the plot and jokes, although it was a financial success grossing over $130 million worldwide.[21] Collectively the films' box office earnings, has resulted in the expansion of the films into a franchise, with additional projects in various degrees of development.
