Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. WikiProject X will study what makes WikiProjects succeed in retaining editors and then design a prototype WikiProject system that will recruit contributors to WikiProjects and help them run effectively. Please review the proposal here and leave feedback. If you have any questions, you can ask on the proposal page or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you for your time! <small>(Also, sorry about the posting mistake earlier. == WikiProject X is live! == |
|||
|
|||
Hello everyone! |
|||
You may have received a message from me earlier asking you to comment on my WikiProject X proposal. The good news is that WikiProject X is now live! In our first phase, we are focusing on research. At this time, we are looking for people to share their experiences with WikiProjects: good, bad, or neutral. We are also looking for WikiProjects that may be interested in trying out new tools and layouts that will make participating easier and projects easier to maintain. If you or your WikiProject are interested, check us out! Note that this is an opt-in program; no WikiProject will be required to change anything against its wishes. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you! |
|||
Note: To receive additional notifications about WikiProject X on this talk page, please add this page to Wikipedia:WikiProject X/Newsletter. Otherwise, this will be the last notification sent about WikiProject X. |

== Joseph Black blue plaque == |
|||
I wonder if anyone could help me to precisely locate the blue plaque commemorating Joseph Black, at Edinburgh University, as mentioned on List of blue plaques erected by the Royal Society of Chemistry ideally by giving its coordinates? A picture would be appreciated, too, please. |
|||
: Hi Andy - I'd suggest sending an e-mail around the Open Knowledge foundation and ScotWiki mailing lists about this as well, to see if you can capture any University of Edinburgh students or staff who happen to pass by it regularly! == Wiki Loves Pride! == |
|||
<div style="padding:3em; font-family:'Helvetica Neue',sans-serif; font-size:110%; line-height:1.75;"> |
|||
You are invited to participate in Wiki Loves Pride! |
|||
* What? Wiki Loves Pride, a campaign to document and photograph LGBT culture and history, including pride events |
|||
* When? June 2015 |
|||
* How can you help? |
|||
*: 1.) Create or improve LGBT-related articles and showcase the results of your work here |
|||
*: 2.) Upload photographs or other media related to LGBT culture and history, including pride events, and add images to relevant Wikipedia articles; feel free to create a subpage with a gallery of your images (see examples from last year) |
|||
*: 3.) Contribute to an LGBT-related task force at another Wikimedia project (Wikidata, Wikimedia Commons, Wikivoyage, etc.) |
|||
Or, view or update the current list of Tasks. This campaign is supported by the Wikimedia LGBT+ User Group, an officially recognized affiliate of the Wikimedia Foundation. Visit the group's page at Meta-Wiki for more information, or follow Wikimedia LGBT+ on Facebook. Remember, Wiki Loves Pride is about creating and improving LGBT-related content at Wikimedia projects, and content should have a neutral point of view. One does not need to identify as LGBT or any other gender or sexual minority to participate. This campaign is about adding accurate, reliable information to Wikipedia, plain and simple, and all are welcome! |
|||
If you have any questions, please leave a message on the campaign's main talk page. |
|||
Thanks, and happy editing! |

== Request for information on WP1.0 web tool == |
|||
Hello and greetings from the maintainers of the WP 1.0 Bot! As you may or may not know, we are currently involved in an overhaul of the bot, in order to make it more modern and maintainable. As part of this process, we will be rewriting the web tool that is part of the project. You might have noticed this tool if you click through the links on the project assessment summary tables. |
|||
We'd like to collect information on how the current tool is used by....you! How do you yourself and the other maintainers of your project use the web tool? Which of its features do you need? How frequently do you use these features? And what features is the tool missing that would be useful to you? We have collected all of these questions at this Google form where you can leave your response. == Project-independent quality assessments == |
|||
Quality assessments by Wikipedia editors rate articles in terms of completeness, organization, prose quality, sourcing, etc. Most wikiprojects follow the general guidelines at Wikipedia:Content assessment, but some have specialized assessment guidelines. A recent Village pump proposal was approved and has been implemented to add a class parameter to WikiProject banner shell, which can display a general quality assessment for an article, and to let project banner templates "inherit" this assessment. |
|||
No action is required if your wikiproject follows the standard assessment approach. Over time, quality assessments will be migrated up to WikiProject banner shell, and your project banner will automatically "inherit" any changes to the general assessments for the purpose of assigning categories. |
|||
However, if your project has decided to "opt out" and follow a non-standard quality assessment approach, all you have to do is modify your wikiproject banner template to pass WPBannerMeta a new QUALITY_CRITERIA parameter. If this is done, changes to the general quality assessment will be ignored, and your project-level assessment will be displayed and used to create categories, as at present. Dominion Cinema
[edit]I agree this definitely deserves an article. The original material appears to have been copied from this site. I'm posting a link to the site here because it could serve as a useful reference. TheRetroGuy (talk) 16:59, 3 October 2009 (UTC)
I started the page on the Dominion Cinema, still needs more work though. Sanethhilll (talk) 11:54, 17 November 2009 (UTC)
Userbox
[edit]I made a new userbox that isn't identical to the Scotland one:
This user is a member of WikiProject Edinburgh |
Anyone object if I substitute this for the current one? Jonathan Oldenbuck (talk) 10:59, 30 October 2009 (UTC)
- No objections from me. I like it. It's actually a better image to use as it's more specific to Edinburgh. It should look pretty good. TheRetroGuy (talk) 12:01, 30 October 2009 (UTC)
- Ok with me. Dalliance (talk) 12:48, 30 October 2009 (UTC)
WP 1.0 bot announcement
[edit]This message is being sent to each WikiProject that participates in the WP 1.0 assessment system. On Saturday, January 23, 2010, the WP 1.0 bot will be upgraded. Your project does not need to take any action, but the appearance of your project's summary table will change. The upgrade will make many new, optional features available to all WikiProjects. Additional information is available at the WP 1.0 project homepage. — Carl (CBM · talk) 03:14, 22 January 2010 (UTC)
I see its the anniversary this year. New article started ... to go to DYK in next 3 days.... care to help? Just start editing. Need more refs? Victuallers (talk) 18:20, 16 March 2010 (UTC)
- Good start, and a good subject, I did a copyedit and added more background. There needs to be much more refs, even for DYK I think. Check in books on the Scottish reformation, histories of Edinburgh, Mary Queen of Scots. I dont know of any books specifically on the siege of Leith but there may be locally published ones. Will try to look in the Central Library next time im there (not likely to be soon as busy...:(. Thanks, Jonathan Oldenbuck (talk) 13:49, 17 March 2010 (UTC)
Schools
[edit]There are articles on most secondary schools in Edinburgh, should those be added to the education section of the article list? I believe that some primary schools have pages and others are listed under the names of suburbs.Lord Spring Onion (talk) 13:48, 13 August 2010 (UTC)
Edinburgh articles have been selected for the Wikipedia 0.8 release
[edit]Version 0.8 is a collection of Wikipedia articles selected by the Wikipedia 1.0 team for offline release on USB key, DVD and mobile phone. Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.
We would like to ask you to review the Edinburgh articles and revisionIDs we have chosen. Selected articles are marked with a diamond symbol (♦) to the right of each article, and this symbol links to the selected version of each article. If you believe we have included or excluded articles inappropriately, please contact us at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8 with the details. You may wish to look at your WikiProject's articles with cleanup tags and try to improve any that need work; if you do, please give us the new revisionID at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8. We would like to complete this consultation period by midnight UTC on Monday, October 11th.
We have greatly streamlined the process since the Version 0.7 release, so we aim to have the collection ready for distribution by the end of October, 2010. As a result, we are planning to distribute the collection much more widely, while continuing to work with groups such as One Laptop per Child and Wikipedia for Schools to extend the reach of Wikipedia worldwide. Please help us, with your WikiProject's feedback!

Edinburgh Meetup - This Saturday
[edit]A meetup will be held in Edinburgh this Saturday, October 1st. Currently just an informal meet in a pub, but hopefully we can make an event of it. This social is being set-up to coincide with Fæ's finalization of the recruitment of a for Wikimedia in Scotland coordinator (6 months full time). So this meetup will be of great interest to anyone interested in this post. Details here; please sign up if you are interested. All welcome. Sorry about the short notice.

Just to let you know, the Lothian Buses page has been nominated for good article status on Wikipedia. However, it does need alterations/improvements to get there. The full review of what needs to be done can be found at Talk:Lothian Buses/GA1, any help would be appreciated!--5 albert square (talk) 17:34, 27 December 2012 (UTC)
www.edinburghvideoguide.com
[edit]Hi all! There's an Edinburgh video guide site at the above domain that contains several good quality videos featuring many of Edinburgh's attractions / points of interest. Much of the site is empty but the 'Things to See & Do' section is fairly busy (I'm assuming it's new - not sure if it's official or not - No .gov links so i'm assuming not). There are a lack of video links on many of the Edinburgh-associated pages on Wiki (not to mention some fairly dull photography) and thought many pages could benefit. Take a look at the vids and see what you think.
I'm not affiliated with the site BTW - Just an Edinburgh born-and-breder who stumbled on the vids via Twitter - Just thought the quality is highly representative of the city... and thought I'd mention.
Cheers! — Preceding unsigned comment added by MuryRaisin (talk • contribs) 18:23, 10 February 2013 (UTC)
Wikipedian in Residence: National Library of Scotland
[edit]I'm delighted to be able to tell people about a new Wikipedian in Residence post at the National Library of Scotland - I've helped work to set this up, and I think there's a real potential for doing great things with the NLS and its collections. It's a paid post, full-time for four months, though this may possibly be negotiable to a longer period at part time - it's worth asking. The job is paid and formally employed by the Library, based in Edinburgh, funded jointly by the Library and by Wikimedia UK. this blog post has further details and a link to the NLS recruitment site.
Please ask me if you've any questions! Andrew Gray (talk) 22:19, 22 April 2013 (UTC)
Bughtlin?
[edit]I haven't been to the area in some years, but is Bughtlin really a named place we should have an article on? Looking at the map, it seems to be a named housing estate in East Craigs, but I'd appreciate some local knowledge to correct me... Andrew Gray (talk) 23:12, 14 May 2013 (UTC)
- ...and likewise Westfield, Edinburgh. Andrew Gray (talk) 21:02, 15 May 2013 (UTC)
- I know Bughtlin through work (public services), and we consider it a discrete area. This is mainly due to its distinct boundaries. The area ultimately has only one point of entry/exit; Maybury Drive, off Maybury Road. Every road off Maybury Drive eventually ends in a cul-de-sac with no connections to the wider area. This is very much a geographical definition on our part though. I'm not aware of any local groups or organisations adopting the Bughtlin name, for example. Dalliance (talk) 22:44, 15 May 2013 (UTC)
Defining the Old and New Towns
[edit]I've been working on splitting up the (enormous) list at List of Category A listed buildings in Edinburgh, pulling out subsidiary lists for List of Category A listed buildings in the Old Town, Edinburgh and List of Category A listed buildings in the New Town, Edinburgh. For want of a better guide, I've been using the map to the right, but I'm not completely convinced by some of its definitions:
- the Old Town extends as far as Tollcross, whereas I wouldn't have included anything past approximately the West Port.
- the New Town has a very fuzzy northern boundary, missing out half of Randolph Crescent, Ainslie Place, and Moray Place in the NW, and the Scotland Street area in the NE. I'm also not sure if the Gayfield Square area should be included.
Any thoughts? These are always going to be relatively arbitrary definitions, but hopefully I can find something most people will feel is vaguely correct. Andrew Gray (talk) 11:24, 26 August 2013 (UTC)
- Think that Gayfield/Broughton St probably should be, as the buildings there are generally of a similar age and style to the later part of the New Town proper. Brendandh (talk) 11:59, 26 August 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks for the confirmation - I don't know that particular corner very well and I'm finding it quite hard to picture the buildings! Andrew Gray (talk) 16:15, 26 August 2013 (UTC)
- The map shown says it is based on this, but there are differences, and I don't know what the source for the latter is. WP practice seems to be to go for a recognised definition, and as far as I can make out there are two in this case. The first is the World Heritage Site, which is the red boundary shown on the map above. It is clearly much more extensive to the west, taking in Donaldsons and parts of Stockbridge. It covers both old and new but could be simply split along the Waverley Valley. The other option, my preference, would be the conservation areas defined by Edinburgh Council. There are separate Old Town and New Town conservation areas - they are shown on this web map, which helpfully includes listed buildings. Of course the WHS and CA boundaries are not the same (New Town CA excludes Dean, for example). But the CA boundaries show a widely accepted definition of each area, which I would prefer over an "arbitrary" user-generated one. Thanks, Jonathan Oldenbuck (talk) 08:02, 2 September 2013 (UTC)
- Sounds good to me! Brendandh (talk) 08:38, 2 September 2013 (UTC)
Assuming no objections, I propose to make the necessary changes to the lists, in the coming days. Buildings which need to be moved are listed here. Thanks, Jonathan Oldenbuck (talk) 12:06, 5 September 2013 (UTC)
- Using the CA sounds sensible to me in principle (I'm a little uncomfortable with being the arbiter here!) - personally I'd quibble about some of the northern areas, but using a formal definition of some kind makes a lot of sense. Their Old-New Town boundary mostly aligns with ours with the exception of a couple of buildings on Regent Road, and they fit better in the NT anyway. However, we're going to hit an immediate problem with the proposed changes - right now the New Town list is a handful of entries away from breaking due to the number of templates, and a net increase of fifty entries will kill it stone dead. As a result, we may have to subdivide the NT in some way. Andrew Gray (talk) 12:15, 5 September 2013 (UTC)
- Pardon my ignorance but break it how? Didn't this page start as one big list? Jonathan Oldenbuck (talk) 12:41, 5 September 2013 (UTC)
- Could a solution be to group entries, where its clear that they are continuous? I'm thinking of Regent Terrace and Royal Terrace for example, which are listed as 30+ buildings in each case, but could be covered by a single list entry, with the individual links in a footnote? Jonathan Oldenbuck (talk) 12:49, 5 September 2013 (UTC) PS this has been done at List of Grade A listed buildings in County Antrim, see the "Adam Yard" entry. Jonathan Oldenbuck (talk) 12:51, 5 September 2013 (UTC)
- The page size is effectively limited by the "template transclusion limit", beyond which the templates won't render - if you look in the page history at the large original version, and scroll to the bottom, you'll see the effect. This was my original impetus to split the list. The other day, when moving some entries, I discovered that the New Town list is just hovering on the edge of usable (it was breaking three lines from the end), and ended up simplifying and rewriting the HS row template to process faster, which allows more to be fitted in. This made it work, but I think adding substantial numbers will probably tip it back over the edge again. The alternative is to remove some functionality from the templates.
- As to grouping... I'm not sure how well this would work. The upload links etc rely on a single number per line, and merging the rows will also confuse the database. Perhaps we could split out individual list pages for dense "micro-areas" like (eg) Princes Street, or Calton Hill? Andrew Gray (talk) 12:54, 5 September 2013 (UTC)
OK I see, that's unfortunate. My first thought then would be to split out the "First New Town". Although not formally defined anywhere, the boundary is probably less contentious than that of the New Town. The boundaries could be:
- Princes Street, Princes Street Gardens and the Mound to the south;
- Charlotte Square in the west;
- Queen Street in the north; and
- St Andrew Square and Register House in the east.
This is probably about half of the entries currently in the New Town list. Any further thoughts? Jonathan Oldenbuck (talk) 13:15, 5 September 2013 (UTC)
- I think that would work if we can come up with something to call the other list :-). My main concern would be that whatever we use should be reasonably understandable to a person trying to guess which list their building is on, but if we have a clear map then this won't be so much of a problem. Andrew Gray (talk) 18:54, 5 September 2013 (UTC)
- It could be split in 4, with separate lists for: First New Town, Eastern New Town, Northern New Town, Western New Town - all recognisable names? Jonathan Oldenbuck (talk) 14:44, 6 September 2013 (UTC)
- I think I'd understand those (but maybe Central rather than First? First is technically correct but not everyone will know the history). Just to guess - Eastern is Calton Hill, the area around the top of Leith Walk, and basically everything east of Register House? Western is the West End, and Northern is everything north of Queen Street? Andrew Gray (talk) 21:37, 6 September 2013 (UTC)

Wikimeet in Edinburgh October 2013
[edit]Hi all - just realised I never introduced myself to WikiProject Edinburgh. I'm the Wikimedian in Residence at the National Library of Scotland, and am working on organising a bunch of neat events in the coming six months (well, I think so, but I'm probably biased). A bunch of information is up on the NLS project page, and I'd love to hear from anyone who is interested in getting involved or has any concerns or questions.
To the point: since there were two fantastic meetups in Glasgow this past year, the attendees at the last meetup agreed that it would be a good idea to host the next Wikimedia meetup in Edinburgh. Details are now available on the event page - the meetup will take place on 27 October at the Malt Shovel Inn, which is very near Waverley station so we hope will attract some Wikimedians from Glasgow and elsewhere nearby! Very much hope to see some new and old faces there. ACrockford (talk) 19:07, 11 September 2013 (UTC)
ScotWiki Mailing List
[edit]Thought this might be of interest: Wikimedia UK have launched a ScotWiki mailing list to help encourage more Wikimedia events in Scotland and hopefully to establish greater contact between Wikimedians throughout the country. You can sign up here - any/everybody is welcome to join! The goal is to spread the word about Wikimedia events or projects in Scotland; you can also promote or organise your own, or join in general discussion - the usual mailing list stuff! ACrockford (talk) 18:20, 23 October 2013 (UTC)
I don't know if anyone around here is interested in the trams at all, but we could use a few pictures of them operating in the city centre, preferably those in the new livery announced today [1]. If anyone has any pictures, or would take some, it would be appreciated. RGloucester — ☎ 20:30, 17 December 2013 (UTC)
Comment on the WikiProject X proposal
[edit]Hello there! (Also, sorry about the posting mistake earlier. If someone already moved my message to the talk page, feel free to remove this posting.) Harej (talk) 22:47, 1 October 2014 (UTC)
WikiProject X is live!
[edit]Hello everyone!
Thank you!
Note: To receive additional notifications about WikiProject X on this talk page, please add this page to Wikipedia:WikiProject X/Newsletter. Otherwise, this will be the last notification sent about WikiProject X.

Joseph Black blue plaque
[edit]I wonder if anyone could help me to precisely locate the blue plaque commemorating Joseph Black, at Edinburgh University, as mentioned on List of blue plaques erected by the Royal Society of Chemistry ideally by giving its coordinates? A picture would be appreciated, too, please.
- Hi Andy - I'd suggest sending an e-mail around the Open Knowledge foundation and ScotWiki mailing lists about this as well, to see if you can capture any University of Edinburgh students or staff who happen to pass by it regularly! Cheers ACrockford (talk) 15:03, 16 March 2015 (UTC)
Edinburgh Meetup #8
[edit]Just wanted to announce that the 8th Edinburgh wikimeet has been scheduled for Wednesday, 22 April from 18:30 onwards at Platform 5, right across from Haymarket Station. See the events page for details - please join us and spread the word! Hope to see many new and old faces there! ACrockford (talk) 13:51, 25 March 2015 (UTC)

New article about an Edinburgh company
[edit]Hi all; I've written a draft page for PODFather (software company in South Gyle) here: User:Beveradb/Draft:PODFather but as I have a COI and I'm fairly new to Wikipedia (well, lurker for 8 years but rarely edited), I'd appreciate somebody else's input to check I've not come across as biased before considering submitting the page for addition outside my User page! Request for information on WP1.0 web tool
[edit]Hello and greetings from the maintainers of the WP 1.0 Bot! As you may or may not know, we are currently involved in an overhaul of the bot, in order to make it more modern and maintainable. As part of this process, we will be rewriting the web tool that is part of the project. You might have noticed this tool if you click through the links on the project assessment summary tables.
Walkerma (talk) 04:24, 27 October 2019 (UTC)

If substantial concerns are not addressed during the review period, the article will be moved to the Featured Article Removal Candidates list for a further period, where editors may declare "Keep" or "Delist" in regards to the article's featured status. Ship accident at Leith
[edit]Is there any member of this WP that is able to get some photos of RV Petrel which heeled over in drydock at Leith yesterday, and upload them to Commons? Both the ship article and the list of shipwrecks in 2023 would benefit from the addition of a photo. Mjroots (talk) 06:29, 23 March 2023 (UTC)
Project-independent quality assessments
[edit]Quality assessments by Wikipedia editors rate articles in terms of completeness, organization, prose quality, sourcing, etc. Most wikiprojects follow the general guidelines at Wikipedia:Content assessment, but some have specialized assessment guidelines. A recent Village pump proposal was approved and has been implemented to add a |class=
parameter to WikiProject banner shell, which can display a general quality assessment for an article, and to let project banner templates "inherit" this assessment.
No action is required if your wikiproject follows the standard assessment approach. Over time, quality assessments will be migrated up to WikiProject banner shell, and your project banner will automatically "inherit" any changes to the general assessments for the purpose of assigning categories.
However, if your project has decided to "opt out" and follow a non-standard quality assessment approach, all you have to do is modify your wikiproject banner template to pass WPBannerMeta a new |QUALITY_CRITERIA=custom
parameter. If this is done, changes to the general quality assessment will be ignored, and your project-level assessment will be displayed and used to create categories, as at present. Aymatth2 (talk) 19:39, 10 April 2023 (UTC)
