In 2016, Hoshino released the single "Koi", a song he had written for the television drama The Full-Time Wife Escapist (2016), in which he also stars in a lead role. It spent seven consecutive weeks atop the Japan Hot 100 and eleven in total, ranking as the fifth most-successful song in the chart's history as of March 2023. The RIAJ has certified it two-times million in digital sales and has also given it two different platinum awards for physical sales and streaming. Following "Koi", Hoshino's singles "Family Song" (2017), "Doraemon" (2018), and "Idea" (2018) also reached first place and were all certified platinum. "Idea" — a digital-exclusive — became the first song on the Japan Hot 100 to hold first place for multiple weeks without physical sale points. "Koi", "Family Song", and "Idea" were featured on Hoshino's fifth and most recent studio album, Pop Virus, on December 19, 2018. With four weeks atop the Japan Hot Albums chart, it was certified double-platinum and placed fourth on the 2019 year-end chart. Oricon ranks it as Hoshino's best-selling album. |
|||
Hoshino released a debut digital download EP, Same Thing, in 2019, reaching number four on Oricon's Combined Albums Chart. He would follow the EP with non-album singles such as the number-two charting "Fushigi" and "Create" (2020). His Spy × Family ending theme "Comedy" (2022) reached number 127 on the Billboard Global 200, his first entry onto the international chart. |

The solo discography of Japanese singer-songwriter and musician Gen Hoshino consists of five original studio albums, two extended plays (EPs), five live albums, nineteen compilations, twenty-two singles,[A] seven promotional singles, and thirty-four music videos (counting works as featured artist). Hoshino debuted as the frontman of the instrumental band Sakerock (2000–2015), playing guitar and marimba.[4] He self-released a CD-R entitled Baka no Uta in 2005, and in 2007 released a CD entitled Barabara as a bundle to a booklet by photographer Taro Hirano.[5][6] After being approached by Haruomi Hosono of Yellow Magic Orchestra and his label Daisyworld, Hoshino released his debut studio album Baka no Uta in June 2010, re-using the title of the 2005 CD-R.[7][8] A joint issue by Daisyworld's Labels United, Victor Entertainment's Speedstar Records, and the Sakerock-signed Kakubarhythm,[B] the album charted at number thirty-six on the Oricon's Albums Chart.[12] After Hoshino's debut on the Billboard Japan Hot 100 with the single "Kudaranai no Naka ni" (2011) at number twelve,[13] the follow-up album Episode was released solely by Speedstar on September 28, 2011, and charted at number five.[14][15]
Three singles were released by Hoshino throughout 2012 — "Film", "Yume no Soto e", and "Shiranai" — which charted on the Hot 100 at fifth, fourth, and third, respectively.[16] They supported his third studio album Stranger, released on May 1, 2013, which had been delayed due to Hoshino falling ill to a subarachnoid hemorrhage in December 2012.[17] The seventy-sixth best-selling Japanese album of the year,[18] it peaked at number two on the album charts,[19][20] and was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of Japan (RIAJ) in 2017.[21] Hoshino went into a second hiatus in June 2013 after a reinspection revealed a relapse in the hemorrhage. He wrote the single "Why Don't You Play in Hell?" (2013; for the film of the same name) while awaiting the reinspection, and created a draft during the waiting period for his surgery that would become the first half of the double A-side "Crazy Crazy" / "Sakura no Mori" (2014).[22][23] In 2015, he released the song "Sun" as the theme to the drama series Kokoro ga Pokitto ne (2015). It attained a triple-platinum certification for digital sales,[24] and also received two gold awards within the physical and streaming categories.[25][26] It was followed by Hoshino's fourth album Yellow Dancer on December 2, 2015, which debuted at number one on the Billboard Japan Hot Albums chart and also topped the East Asian music chart in Taiwan.[27][28] Placing sixth on Billboard Japan's year-end ranking for 2016,[29] the album received platinum and gold certifications from the RIAJ in the physical sales and download categories, respectively.[30][31]
In 2016, Hoshino released the single "Koi", a song he had written for the television drama The Full-Time Wife Escapist (2016), in which he also stars in a lead role.[32] It spent seven consecutive weeks atop the Japan Hot 100 and eleven in total,[33][34] ranking as the fifth most-successful song in its history as of the March 2023 all-time chart.[35] The RIAJ has certified the song two-times million in digital sales and also gave it two different platinum awards for physical sales and streaming.[36][37][38] Following "Koi", Hoshino's singles "Family Song" (2017), "Doraemon" (2018), and "Idea" (2018) also reached first place,[39][40][41] and were all certified platinum.[42][43] "Idea" — a digital-exclusive — became the first song on the Japan Hot 100 to hold first place for consecutive weeks without physical sale points.[40] "Koi", "Family Song", and "Idea" were featured on Hoshino's fifth and most recent studio album, Pop Virus, on December 19, 2018.[44] With four weeks atop the Japan Hot Albums chart,[45] it was certified double-platinum and placed second on the 2019 year-end chart.[46][47] Oricon ranks it as Hoshino's best-selling album.[48][49]
The aftermath of Pop Virus left Hoshino burnt out. However, his befriending of the British indie band Superorganism, Japanese rapper Punpee , and English musician Tom Misch resulted in the production of the four-track EP Same Thing (2019), which peaked at number four on the Oricon Combined Albums chart.[49][50] Hoshino released the singles "Create" and "Fushigi" in 2021, which charted at numbers ninety-four and seventy-one on the Billboard Global Excl. US chart, his first international chart entries.[51] "Comedy" (2022), the ending theme to the anime series Spy × Family (2022–), entered the Global 200 at 127 and also charted in Taiwan at twenty-one.[52][53] In 2023, Hoshino released his second EP Lighthouse, consisting of theme music written for the Netflix talk show of the same name that he co-hosted with comedian Masayasu Wakabayashi.[54] It charted at number six on the Billboard Japan Hot Albums and at eighteen on Oricon's Combined Albums.[49][55]
