The new page for dealing with translations from German is here: Wikipedia:Translation.

This is a page for German-English translation requests: some have been moved from Wikipedia:Translation into English, where other languages are still listed. Click here to check for available translators

For guidelines on how to translate some German terms please see the German translation guide. For discussions about how to translate articles use the article talk page, this page's talk page or the German-speaking Wikipedians' notice board.

Instructions

To request an article please add a heading such as this one: ;[[:de:Article name]]. The semicolon ensures that the article title is bolded, but does not add a separate subsection to the table of contents. Remember the first colon before the de in the article name, it's important. Then, add the following bullet points:

  • Corresponding English-language article: (Required) Enter the name of the corresponding English article, leaving it as a red link if necessary. If you are unsure how the German article name would translate to English, simply write None.
  • Status: (Required) (originally) "Unclaimed".
To take responsibility for the work, indicate "In progress <user> <date>".
If you're finished with what you can handle, but there is more to do: "Partially translated by <user> <date>".
One step past that might be "Translated, but review requested by <user> <date>".
If it's finished, mark it "Complete <user> <date>" and move it (as described below).
  • Originally Requested by: (Required) <user> <date> (use ~~~~)
  • Other notes: (Optional) Anything else you want to add. If you wish to co-request an article to be translated, please sign here

When writing a request on this page, you can also add {{translation request from German (old)}} on the talk page of the equivalent English article, if one exists. This produces the following message:

Please do indicate in the references section of the newly created article that an article in a foreign-language Wikipedia was among your sources. For example, the references section of the article "Paragraph 175" begins, Much of the content of this article comes from the equivalent German-language Wikipedia article (retrieved September 30, 2004). The following references are cited by that German-language article..." Note that something like this (without that last sentence) would be in order even if the German-language article did not cite any references of its own. You may want to use the template {{German}} for this.

Also, please don't forget to add interwiki links all around.

When you complete work on an article, it would be polite to inform the original requester on his/her talk page, move this request to the talk page of the relevant article, and add an entry to Completed Translations.

After about 30 days, even that can be moved to Wikipedia:Translation archive

Please add your request at the bottom of each section.

I could help as the original author. The biggest problem I'd face if I had to write it in English is the beginning with its grammatical note on the slang-word - that should be different in English. Another weakness is the most recent section at the end. Here I am thinking of expanding the German edition a bit. There are some national views in this article (Germans have a GDR-Cult) - the English version will be challenging as cult has a slightly different taste wherever you live; it will address people from nations all over the world. So it will not just be a translation, I guess. --Olaf Simons 14:23, 1 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Olaf, I am feeling a little insecure now if the task isn't probably a little too big for me, after reading your last remark. Maybe I should start the new version on my user discussion page and we could improve it together? Lucien the Librarian 08:15, 22 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I think it might be appropriate to translate all this material, but contextualize it. If it becomes, in part, an article on certain aspects of German culture, I think that is all to the good: instead of telling English-speakers what they probably already know, it would tell them something new. It may belong at a different title, leaving Cult classic the near-disambiguation that it already is. I do have one question, though: to what extent is any of this verifiable? It is definitely a fun article, but we've had a lot of arguments in the English-language Wikipedia about this sort of article: who gets to determine what is a "cult"? For example, I see the Beatles listed. While there are Beatle fanatics who carry their love of the Beatles to cult levels, at least in the English-speaking world we would never call the Beatles a "cult band", because in English it suggests a lack of mainstream popularity; in particular, it suggests that the bulk of interest comes from ardent fans, and that most other people wouldn't really care. - Jmabel | Talk 23:32, 14 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Well, the list is, of course, strictly unverifiable. It is what readers believe to be cult and there is a continous coming and going of titles and links with disagreement on "real" cult-objects. Yet on the other hand: the phenomenon is one of change and fashion, so I am amused about the exchange on the discussion page where people defend their classics. No I guess one should not offer an English article on German cult-classics, one should rather have with wikipedia the choice to switch and see what views and fashions different nations produce (and where there is an international market of cult classics).
The good part of the German article is, I hope, the history leading from the 19th century through pop-art and the 68-generation (Wodstock, Vietnam or what you have instead) into the modern industry of cult-classics like Startreck Enterprise, Matrix, the Simpsons etc. (I had to remove the images of these, which I had taken from the English Wikipedia, so they should get into the English article as well...)

Please note thet the German Artikel de:Zazaische Sprache recently got a major overhaul and now has a very detailed section on grammatics etc. Whereas I'm a native speaker of German, I'd prefer to give the task of translation someone other, preferably a native speaker of English with a fair notion of Linguistics. All the comparisons with German obviously need to be replaced with comparisons to English, which looks like a hefty piece of work. --Pjacobi 11:58, 17 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • Status: I'm starting a translation of this. --CWO, 25 October 2006

Having done the first sections up to the start of "21. Jahrhundert" and wanting to change something ("englischen" to "britischen") in the German text, I see it is blocked from being edited, because of vandalism, and that preceding discussions have at times been rather acrimonious. I am uncertain about the wisdom of going on, and about creating a page, which if the German article is any guide, is going to be vandalised and the subject of editing wars. I'm relatively new at this (I mean Wikipedia, not translation), so am not going to proceed further until I get some guidance from more experienced users/administrators, which I should greatly appreciate. CWO, 20:16, 26 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

On further thought, I think it is better that I do not proceed with the translation and create an article in English, unless it is arranged that it is immediately blocked by an administrator, otherwise it seems very likely that the article in English would become a forum for people to continue in English the battles (vandalism and editing wars) that they have been stopped from having in German. If it's not going to be possible to block the article in English immediately it appears, then I regret the disappointment caused to Biruitorul by having raised his/her expectations. I know now to check the status of the German article before embarking on a translation. CWO 22:03, 26 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

As a result of replies to the above, I have resumed work on the translation.CWO 20:41, 6 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The translation of the German text itself is now complete. It has taken longer than I expected, but this is a statement of fact, not a complaint; I am still willing to continue to translate articles for Wikipedia. There remain several other aspects I have to work on: (1) checking which Wikilinks in the German text have an equivalent in English and inserting them where applicable; (I am not at this stage planning to undertake translations of those existing only in German.) (2) working out the precise content of the invisible comments I want to make and then inserting the comments; (3) dealing with the references embedded in the German text and working out how best to show these in an article in English; (4) working out how to show the table of census figures; (5) finally, formatting the text and creating an article, neither of which I have done before. I shall continue to work on these steadily.CWO 17:59, 29 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • Okay...so far I have combined the information from the German table and the English table to create a more well-rounded table, based on the German format. Right now I need to stop and wind up some power cords, though...this is fun. I'll be back later to work more on the translation. Bob 19:40, 9 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • Alrighty...I've translated the introductory paragraphs and the Characteristics. I'm leaving the Toxicity on the English page, because it doesn't look like the German one covers that. On Monday I'll get back to this...g2g right now. Bob 21:26, 9 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I decided the English history is better than the German history...the part about the present production should be translated, and the rest of the article that follows that section...I, however, do not understand the text, so it will do little good for me to translate it...time for someone else to take over this project, I'm resigning from this article. Recently completed translations – proofreading

Remember that a "completed" translation can always be improved by people who do not speak the language it was translated from — if you enjoy copyediting, browse these articles and tidy up any unnatural-sounding language which might have slipped in.

Don't forget that translating for Wikipedia is a little different from a professional translation. At Wikipedia, editors can change sentences or facts and leave out or add anything if they feel it improves the article. If something in the English translation is missing or different from the German article, this may not be a mistake, but a deliberate choice.

For earlier translations, see Wikipedia:Translation archive.
