Akshay Lead

Akshay Kumar hails from Amritsar, Punjab. Born on 9 September 1967 to a Soldier father. Akshay's father retired from the Indian Army and worked as an accountant for UNICEF in Delhi, his birth place. Having a transferable job his Akshay's family had to move to Mumbai when his a 3 year-old in a one-room abode in Sion Koliwada region.

Suprisingly Akshay gained admission to Don Bosco school without interviewing. He learnt from his father that he threw a paper into the waste-paper basket on his own lying on the floor. This courteous gesture was seen by Father Gatty thereby granting him instant admission.

Akshay in an interview with Times of India admitted that he was the type of kid who always spent more time playing in the gallis than studying. His father being a former state-representing wrestler understood his interests and sent him to Bangkok after quitting Khalsa College just opposite to his school to learn Martial Arts. In Bangkok Akshay would join Metro Guest House as a cook at the same time learnt Thai boxing and Tai Chi. He currently holds a Sixth-Degree Black Belt in Martial Art and is among the 15 or so to do so in India.

Critical reception

Upon release, Once Upon Ay Time In Mumbai Dobaara! received mixed to negative reviews. Noted film critic and analyst, Rajeev Masand writing for CNN-IBN gave the film stars and said "Once Upon Ay Time in Mumbai Dobaara is the equivalent of getting a root canal." He criticised the naivety of the three main leads, describing them as "plain stupid". He also derided Akshay for his on-screen "in-your-face flamboyance" which paled when compared to Ajay Devgn's "sexy nonchalance". He also heaped scorn on the "rat-a-tat punch lines" and Imran Khan, who appeared to be an "urban rich kid slumming it out at a dress-up party". He noted a few strong points such as Sonali Bendre's spirited cameo as Mumtaz and a particularly intelligent scene where Shoiab walks into a police station seemingly to surrender himself but claimed them to be "small mercies in a major misfire".

Writing for The Times of India, Madhureeta Mukherjee awarded the film stars, telling readers to "Watch this story of deewana dons and their dilrubas. There's nothing criminal about it!" She appraised Milan Luthria for being able to capture the essence and aroma of the period in which it is set. She also praised Kumar's acting and portrayal of the Don, Shoaib Khan with "bhai act with flamboyance and mojo. He gets a chance to do what he does best – herogiri (albeit less menacing, more entertaining), with charisma and clap-trap dialoguebaazi." Although she pointed to Imran Khan's ill-at-ease way of playing a rogue and the second half of the film being less engaging than the previous due to dialogue adding drama to the story, claiming it to get "at times too overbearing". She ended with saying "This film has its moments, but it's not as compelling as the prequel."

Subhra Gupta writing for The Indian Express gave the film stars and said that "After all the shoot-outs and bang-bangs are over, you are left with a film which leaves you with so little new that you wonder if there's any juice left in this style of retro gangsta flick. Or are we heading for a third-time-in-Mumbai-Tibara?" Gupta heavily criticised Sonakshi's act as the "goody-two-shoes" heroine Jasmine who is "more naïve than any young woman has the right to be".

Reviewing the film for Koimoi, Mohar Basu gave the title stars and said that "OUATIMD lacks the effervescence and naturalness of its prequel. The vibrancy of the script is diluted with hard-to-believe romance, minimal story; the film falters due to lack of action and the calamity that OUATIMD reflected in abundance. This one isn't really a dull bore but fails to spark off the enigma of the former edition! Crime thrillers and love dramas shouldn't be mingled, it results in an insipid broth like this." Basu disliked the overtness of melodrama in the film; its lack of euphoric stand-out moments in part because of the "lazy" script, claiming it falls apart when compared to its predecessor; the lack-lustred chemistry between the leads and the intended surprise for the audience when Sonakshi declares her lover whilst rejecting another. She questioned the existence of the plot's core theme of obsession over romance which seems out of the blue, considering there are "barely any tender moments or delicate minutes of love". She called Akshay Kumar sleazy in his dialogue delivery, outright hilarious at times for failing to add depth, charisma or persona in a role that "Emraan Hashmi had immortalized". She described Sonakshi Sinha's character as a "chatterbox replete with idiocracy" while saying Imran Khan was "trying-too-hard-to-be-suave", and that the film further imposes the impression of his inherent inability to act. The only highs of the film according to Basu are Sonali Bendre's compelling and convincing act in a single solid scene where she effortlessly conveys the emotional carnage Shoaib's love had caused her over the years and the action scenes in the first hour of the film, notably when both Kumar and Khan jump over a terrace together which showed glimpses of the "panache of what it had attempted on".

• "Ye Tune Kya Kiya" – A Sufi song; Vijayakar praised composer for bridging the generation gap between the "best of the melodious past and today's music" and for giving it a Sufi-rock treatment. According to him, it is a successor to the Sufi song "Tumjo Aye Mere Zindagi Mein" from the soundtrack of the prequel; this time, it is a more-intricately designed tribute.
• "Tayyab Ali" – A modern adaption of the song from Amar Akbar Anthony by Pritam's assistant, Anupam Amod, who recreates the "near-identical situation to the original song, and the imaginative contemporary tenor". He compared the lyrics by screenwriter Rajat Aroraa to the original irreverent chorus by Anand Bakshi, with Pritam keeping his distance from the old orchestration and choral patterns, calling comparisons with Mohammed Rafi and Javed Ali "unfair" and "odious".
• "Tu Hi Khwahish" – A counterpart of Parda from the previous soundtrack, which was inspired by two classics. The energetic, romantic lyrics and acoustic arrangements are a "hark back to such tracks from Prakash Mehra and Feroz Khan with Kalyanji-Anandji", with "orchestral nuances reminding us of R.D. Burman". He called it the finest track, despite high-pitched vocals from Sunidhi Chauhan.
• "Chugliyaan" – The weakest link on the album, Vijayakar called it too calculated in melodies and lyrics and an average, orthodox track similar to ad infinitum songs by lesser composers.

Jogider Tuteja reviewed each song for Rediff:

• "Ye Tune Kya Kiya" – Tuteja praised the lyrics and Javed Bashir's vocals, "that gel well with the overall flow of the song".
• "Tayyab Ali" – He criticised the song's annoying English lyrics, which foil the singer's earnest vocals.
• "Tu Hi Khwahish" – Tuteja praised the song for regaining the mood lost by "Tayyab Ali", saying it would make Asha Bhosle proud (particularly because of Sunidhi Chauhan's vocals).
• "Chugliyaan" – He called the final track, a Sufi number, a "beautiful love song with a poetic feel to it" and an "impressive chorus". He compared Javed Ali's vocals to those of Sonu Nigam, adding that they were well-supported by Sahir Ali Bagga.

Bryan Durham, in The Times of India, said that "brevity seems to be the soul of the Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai Dobaara soundtrack":

• "Ye Tune Kya Kiya" – "Javed Bashir's rugged voice gets aashiqana with the very traditional 'Ye Tune Kya Kiya'." He points out the musical nod to Pee Loon throughout the song.
• "Tayyab Ali" – "Ali infuses the required balance of energy and restraint" in Javed Ali's cover of the song, which distinguishes itself from the original lyrically with instrumental and thematic roots to the original.
• "Tu Hi Khwahish" – A "nod to the item numbers of the 80s and 90s, like Parda Hai Parda was in OUATIM" on Sunidhi Chauhan's number where she tries to replicate Asha Bhosle in the ending by a harkat while at the same time "channelling a famous Helen number, but doesn't quite impress".
• "Chugliyaan" – "Fresh sound-wise but seems confused in what it's trying to achieve" on the song by Javed Ali;

"Pritam's compositions here are competent but nowhere as memorable as what he accomplished with OUATIM."

Mohar Basu reviewed the soundtrack for Koimoi:

• "Ye Tune Kya Kiya" – She credits Javed Bashir's voice with the beauty of the song, but the fast tempo and disjointed lyrics dull the song's impact.
• "Tayyab Ali" – Without comparing this version to the original, Basu praised Javed Ali's ecletic, humorous lyrics. In her view, remakes demonstrate a lack of originality and "this track is [a] lag for me".
• "Tu Hi Khwahish" – Basu called it a brilliant song with a vigorous, catchy beat: "The retro cabaret beats comes across well in Sunidhi's sensuous voice".
• "Chugliyaan" – Basu gave the song zero impact on first hearing, criticising the love ballad's flat arrangement.

She summarised, "Overall the OUATIMD album is just about alright. With such few songs to gauge from it is an average album with only 'Tu Hi Khawish' standing out in terms of lingering music. I am going with 2.5/5 for this album. Pritam and his singers can do much better than this. I was expecting the original OUATIM delight but in comparison this one turned out to be drab!"
