Abolitionists Rising is an American anti-abortion organization based in Oklahoma. It is known for its complete opposition to abortion and debates with pedestrians and college students.
Theological position
As indicated by the Norman Statement[1] posted on the organization's website, Abolitionists Rising is Protestant and views the United States as being under divine judgment, and cites the widespread affirmation of a "holocaust [against preborn children]" and many other forms of moral degeneracy as evidence of this condition.[1]
Advocacy for abolition and nationwide repentance
Abolitionists Rising asserts that its objectives are the "abolition of abortion, the repentance of the nation, and the glorification of God,"[2] and that it exists to "spread abolitionist ideas and support abolitionist organizations, projects, and legislation."[2] This means that they also engage with people when they come up to discuss their opinions or questions about Christianity, the Bible, or the gospel in general.
The organization has won several members of the pro-life movement to the abolitionist stance, including the Southern Baptist Convention.[3][4] It also works with other abolitionists and organizes "Repent With Us" conferences and participates in Abolition Day with the likes of Sen. Dusty Deevers and Joseph Silk.[5]
Key principles
No exceptions
Because Abolitionists Rising views abortion as infanticide, it sees the nuancing between different types of abortion (to allow it in cases of incest, rape, etc.) as unjust discrimination against preborn human beings based on family history and circumstance of conception. (Namely, a child conceived in love is no more deserving of life than a child conceived in rape.)[6] For this reason, it pursues an immediate end to abortion, without making exceptions.[2]
Abolitionist, not pro-life
Abolitionists Rising is also particular about its distinction from the pro-life, or incrementalist, position—which makes compromises with the pro-choice movement—and deems the latter to be unacceptable. In using the term "abolition," Abolitionists Rising also draws a parallel between pro-abortion rhetoric and pro-slavery rhetoric (i.e. My plantation, my choice vs. My body, my choice).[7][6]
The organization says that there is a similarity between the religious motivation during the Second Great Awakening of the original abolitionists and their own, in regard to their common belief in the idea that humans, from conception onwards, are made in the image of God and thus deserve equal protection under the law of the land.[8] Owing to such convictions, the organization's website states, "We deny that secular argumentation alone is sufficient to address the sin of abortion because secular reasoning cannot provide a justification for objective truth or human rights."[9]
Activities
Online advocacy
Like other abolitionist groups, Abolitionists Rising promotes laws and policies that advocate for the outlawing of abortion, indiscriminate of circumstance. In part due to the overturning of Roe v. Wade, and in part due to the group's viral videos on social media (such as via YouTube Shorts),[10] the organization gained significant traction in 2023.[11]
Appeal through art
Much of the artistic content generated by Abolitionists Rising is unique and is created by T. Russell Hunter, one of the main debaters often featured in the organization's social media content. Many of these artworks are put on posters, which are held up at art walks and other public streets to prompt conversation.[12]
Theological engagement
The Abolitionist Rising debaters go on college campuses to debate with students not only on abortion, but also often in conjunction with a broad range of other theological topics, such as the gospel,[13][14] typology,[15] religions other than Christianity,[16] sins other than abortion,[14] divine forgiveness,[17][18] logic,[8] history,[19][20] and philosophy.[6]
The debaters also opt for the use of biblical language. For example, they consistently describe abortion as "child sacrifice,"[21] drawing a parallel between modern abortion and ancient Israel's infanticidal practices in its worship of Molech. Like the original abolitionists, the group also describes crimes primarily in terms of the category of sin, such as terming the sin of chattel slavery as the sin of "man-stealing," a word borrowed from Exodus 21:16.[22]
Abolitionism
Among the ideas that Abolitionists Rising promotes, the following include some of the most prominent ones that are employed most repetitively or effectively:
Against pro-choice arguments
- Arguing "My body, my choice" is morally equivalent to arguing "My plantation, my choice"; both pro-slavery advocates and pro-choice advocates employ the same argument—that some human beings are not fully human (slaves and preborn humans, respectively).[7][6][23]
- Arguing "It's my choice" equivocates the matter of abortion by euphemizing (softening) the latter part that follows the sentence: "...to abort (murder) my child."
- Believing in universal human rights and yet requiring viability as an essential human characteristic is unjust and hypocritical. Comatose patients, born babies, and many paralyzed people are fully human even though they are dependent on other bodies in order to survive.[24]
- Claiming to believe in the bodily autonomy of every individual and yet rejecting a preborn neighbor's autonomy is hypocritical; the child's body is not the same as the mother's.
- In cases of rape, the abortion punishes the child (an innocent) for the sin of the father (the rapist), which is unjust. The rapist should bear the guilt and be executed, not the child in the womb, who has done nothing wrong.[25][26]
- Opposing the death penalty for rapists and yet still supporting abortion is unjust and hypocritical; you have no problem terminating the innocent, but not with clearing the guilty (the rapist).
- Pro-choice arguments that cite rape as a valid exception for abortion do so in bad faith; the arguer is usually trying to justify all cases of abortions, not merely the ones subsequent to rape.
Against pro-life arguments
- Legal immunity for women who abort their preborn children gives special murder rights for mothers.[27][28]
- Decriminalizing, and therefore destigmatizing, abortion fails to keep parents accountable and therefore leaves more motivation for them to abort (murder) their preborn children.[29]
- Letting women get away with abortion without legally treating them as murderers denies women the chance to recognize their sin, repent, and be reconciled to their Creator.[30]
- God is completely holy and therefore detests the bloodshed that the pro-life movement concedes in order to appease the pro-choice side (namely, by passing laws that outlaw only some abortions).[31]
- Those who profess Christ and support the decriminalization of abortion to a certain point are being hypocritical and logically inconsistent by condoning murder.[32][33]
Assault by a police officer
Due to the controversial topic of abortion, the debaters of Abolitionists Rising often face overt hostility from passersby, including from various members of a local security staff or outspoken opponents, including being told to debate only in the free speech areas or to remove themselves completely from a public area. In 2023, there was an encounter with an off-duty police officer and his friends, who threatened physical violence against the debaters by throwing the cameras down on the ground and ramming one of them with a car.[34][35]
