Notre Dame Math Club, also known as NDMC, is the esteemed math club of Notre Dame College, Dhaka, distinguished as as one of the finest college-level clubs in Bangladesh. It is a vibrant hub for learning, collaboration, and intellectual growth, guided by it's motto, “Mighty Math to Feel the Almighty and His Creation.” NDMC provides a supportive environment where students can engage with mathematics beyond the classroom and discover its myriad applications in the real world. Its activities include regular workshops and seminars where esteemed guest speakers, including mathematicians, lecturers, and experts in the field, are invited to share their knowledge and wisdom with members. The organization also organizes weekly math sessions, Intra Olympiads, Annual National Festivals, and various other events throughout the year, creating a dynamic and engaging environment for mathematical enthusiasts.

NDMC boasts three official Olympiad teams: ‘Team π’, ‘Team e’, and ‘Team φ’, as well as a Rubik’s cube team named ‘NDMC Pentagram’. It also has regular publications including 'The Function', an annual magazine; 'The Plane', a quarterly wall magazine; and 'The Number', a unique handwritten magazine.

Notre Dame Math Club was established on March 14, 2017, Pi Day, by Md. Rezaul Karim, a Mathematics lecturer of Notre Dame College, Dhaka.[2] The founding executive committee, consisting of Inan Marshad (Hypothesis), Tanjeem Azwad Zaman (Graphing), Syed Safayat Ahmed (Projection) and orhers played a crucial role in laying the foundation and setting the direction for the club. The current club moderator is Md. Azizur Rahman, also a Mathematics lecturer of Notre Dame College, Dhaka.[3]

Events

Apart from regular programs, the club also organizes the annual inter-school/inter-college program called the Notre Dame Math Festival. During this festival various mathematical competitions are held among school and college-level students from multiple institutions.[4]

Solo events included Math Olympiad (Find Based), Math Olympiad (Proof Based), Math in Motion, Calculus Mania, CombiConundrum, Numeralgia, Function Graphing, Geometric Construction, Crack the Code, Human Calculator, Speed Math (Online), Math Counts, IQ Olympiad, Math History Quiz, Sudoku, Crossword Puzzle, and Speed Cubing. An extraordinary workshop titled "IMO Adda" was conducted on the college basketball ground, featuring three outstanding achievers who won bronze medals and an honorable mention at the International Mathematical Olympiad 2023, representing Bangladesh.[12]

Team segments such as Project Display, Wall magazine, Scrapbook allowed participants to showcase their creativity, collaborate closely, and foster camaraderie that extended beyond the event itself. Prizes, certificates, crests, and various gifts were awarded to the winners, and renowned judges were selected to evaluate the displays created by participants.

The Plane

Notre Dame Math Club is formed with various departments and the Publication Department is one of them. The works of the Publication Department are mainly separated into online and offline sectors.

  • The Plane: 'The Plane' is a quarterly wall magazine of Notre Dame Math Club, displayed on the second floor of the Ganguly Building at Notre Dame College. It displays theoretical explanations, shows biographies of remarkable mathematicians and presents mathematical content.
  • The Function: 'The Function' is an annually published magazine. It contains mathematical writings from students, teachers, and honorable personalities. On Pi Day 2018, the club published its first printed annual magazine called The Function.
  • The Number: 'The Number' is a hand-written magazine which illustrates the articles of the students where they share their mathematical knowledge.The club annually publishes a handwritten scrap magazine called The Number on Pi Day.

  • Facebook Page: NDMC posts numerous mathematical writings on its official Facebook page called 'Notre Dame Math Club'. The posts mainly include articles written on amazing mathematical concepts and creative writings on various significant days. Moreover, the page provides updates about all types of club activities.

Every year, the Notre Dame Math Club selects three official Olympiad teams, each comprised of three members. Here are the teams for Batch 2024:

These teams represent NDMC in various local, national, and international mathematical competitions such as such as IMO, IGO, APMO, CERN Competitions and hackathons, showcasing the club's commitment to excellence and competitive spirit in the field of mathematics.

Achievements

Notre Dame Math Club has consistently excelled in prestigious events such as the Bangladesh Mathematical Olympiad (BDMO), where members like Md. Ashraful Islam Fahim earned the title of Champion of the Champions and received the Eng. Lutfur Rahman Memorial Prize in Mathematics in 2022.[13] Tahmeed Hamim Chowdhury was honored with the Khodadad Khan Memorial Award the same year.[13] In 2024, Mahir Faisal, the vice president of the Session & Workshop Department of the club, emerged as the Champion in BDMO, with Sougato Ghosh Aunkur securing the 1st Runner Up position. [14] Additionally, members like Aritra Dash have distinguished themselves internationally, receiving accolades such as being a TST Camper and achieving high rankings in competitions like the Asian Pacific Mathematics Olympiad and Iranian Geometry Olympiad (IGO). In addition to their successes in mathematics competitions like the Bangladesh Mathematical Olympiad (BDMO) and the Asia Pacific Mathematical Olympiad (APMO), Ahmed Saad Sabit, the former secretary of the Olympiad Department of the club and S.M. Abdul Fattah received "Honourable Mention" at the International Physics Olympiad in 2023 & 2022 respectively. [15]
