Linton is a city in Stockton Township, Greene County, Indiana, United States. The population was 5,774 at the 2000 census. A coal mining town, it is located southeast of Terre Haute, Indiana. The current mayor is Tom Jones.

History

Linton was essentially founded around the entrepreneuring of John W. Wines, who first sold goods in the Linton area, briefly in 1831. Although he would later relocate to Fairplay, he returned and opened a general store in Linton in 1837. He would later build a small horse mill as well as a tannery, and started a recurring fur trade with the French in Vincennes. The town itself was officially chartered and named in June 1850, laid out by Hannah E. Osborn and Isaac V. Coddington. In 1904, bandleader/actor Phil Harris was born in Linton.

Art and Entertainment

Linton Music Festival Mayberry meets Woodstock is the best way to describe the Linton Music Festival (LMF). It's small town meets big festival as nearly 40 artists grace 3 stages over 3 days in the rural Indiana city of Linton (pop. 6,000) and home to The Goose Pond, one of the Nation's largest wetland preservation projects. This year’s festival will take place August 29th-31st in the shaded confines of Humphreys Park. From garage bands to hot independent artists, the music offerings are very diverse with genres ranging from indie rock to bluegrass to Jazz.

Last year, over 10,000 people showed up from all over the Midwest to take in the sights and sounds of LMF. The festival provides itself in being a free, non-exclusive event that offers entertainment for all ages, shapes, colors, and sizes. Camping is available in several local areas close to the festival grounds.
