The Perm nightclub explosion was an explosion that went off in the Khromaya Loshad' (Russian: Хромая лошадь, meaning the "Lame Horse") nightclub on Kuybysheva Street no.9 in Perm, Russia. It killed more than 100 people, and injured 160 others attending the nightclub, which was celebrating its eighth anniversary on 4 December 2009.[3][4][5][6][7][8] It has been reported that the Russian Prosecutor's Investigative Committee spokesman Vladimir Markin said the fire was caused by an unsanctioned use of outdoor fireworks, and was not an act of terrorism. [9][10]

According to an emergency services spokesman, most victims died from smoke inhalation and carbon monoxide poisoning.[11] Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin dispatched two planes to the area equipped to medically transport burn trauma victims. An Ilyushin Il-76 transported 20 of the most severely injured victims to hospitals in Moscow, which eventually expect to receive up to 55 such patients.[9]

In Perm, a hotline has been established for residents seeking information about anyone they know who might have been killed or injured.[9]

President Dmitry Medvedev sent many high-level government officials to Perm to aid the victims and manage the incident and start the criminal investigation.

The fire

According to witnesses, an accident involving a "cold" firework, designed for indoor use, occurred during an eighth anniversary celebration.[12] The malfunctioned firework burst into flames, with walls and ceiling, decorated with woven twigs, quickly catching fire and filling the building with smoke. A panic and a stampede ensued when many patrons found themselves cut off from the exit, with some unaware of the emergency exit's location.
