Amir Taaki is a UK software developer. He is known as the chairman of the Bitcoin Consultancy, as a Bitcoin project developer and for pioneering many open-source projects. In 2010 he established the Bitcoin Consultancy in the UK, where he works on coordinating and developing Bitcoin projects.

Early years

In 2007, Taaki became heavily involved in Crystal Space development under the pseudonym of genjix.[1]. Contributing both artwork and code. He developed a number of free software games and was a participant in the Blender project Yo Frankie.[2] He was a 2007 notable speaker at the GC in Leipzig and released an SDL collision library SDL_Collide in addition to his work on Crystal Space.

Bitcoin

Taaki has been a prolific developer and outspoken advocate for Bitcoin. Speaking in the Guardian, Amir Taaki said "People in the third world are at the mercy of corrupt governments and banks".[3] Instead Taaki advocates for a monetary system based on mathematics and cryptography as provided by Bitcoin.[4]

Originally he became interested in Bitcoins through the idea of developing a free software poker site. Having been working in free software for 10 years, and then playing poker professionally for 2 years, Taaki decided to create a piece of free software to allow people to create their own poker sites and drive the down the cost of rake. The site was destined to use bitcoins and slowly his focus turned more to Bitcoin. Taaki states that the project is currently on hold.[5][6]

Taaki has founded the UK exchange Britcoin.co.uk as a means to help the growth of Bitcoin. The exchange is run as a non-profit with no fees. It is the largest UK exchange by volume. The software running the exchange, named Intersango, is released as free software.[7][8] US Senators have written a letter to Attorney General Eric Holder and the chief of the DEA regarding the use of Bitcoin in "black market" transactions.[9] Amir Taaki under the title of Britcoin, the UK exchange, responded with a statement calling for regulation of Bitcoin exchanges by law enforcement.[10][11]

Taaki is currently the main developer on libbitcoin. The project aims to rewrite Bitcoin's internal architecture to be highly modular and configurable. He states that having an API will enable people to quickly to build Bitcoin related applications quickly and in a more scalable manner.

He is the author of a Spesmilo, an alternative Bitcoin front-end GUI written in Python released in February 2011. He also is the original author of the Bitcoin stock-exchange client named black-market and maintains a custom Bitcoin version on gitorious.[12] He created a merchant site named Pastecoin for sharing files[13] and a bitcoin site to fund Bitcoin client features via bounties for developers.[12]

Bitcoin Consultancy

In April 2011, Amir co-founded the Bitcoin Consultancy, a group focused on bitcoin project development.[14]

In April 2011, we formed this consultancy as a collaborative effort to take bitcoin outside the world of tech geeks and hobbyists into the real world.
