Volodymyr Kubiyovych (Ukrainian: Володимир Кубійович; 23 September, 1900 (Nowy Sącz,(now Poland)) - 2 November, 1985 (Paris, France)) was a Ukrainian politician, statesman and historian. He was one of the leaders of Ukrainian nationalist movement in Galicia before and during World War II. As such, Kubiyovych has been the main proponent of the cooperation between Ukrainian organizations and Nazi Germany aimed to the establishing of an independent Ukrainian state. After the war, he became one of the leading politicians and scholars of Ukrainian diaspora on the West.

Biography

During the years 1928 to 1939, Kubiyovych taught at the University of Kraków (Poland). .

In 1940, he was appointed professor of the Ukrainian Free University in Prague (Czechoslovakia). Since 1931, Kubiyovych has been a full member of the Shevchenko Scientific Society, heading its geography commission.

During the World War II he headed the Ukrainian Central Committee (UCC) in Kraków. The committee was the officially sanctioned Ukrainian political and community organization under Nazi German administration during 1939-1945, responsible for social services, veteran affairs, education, youth and economic activities.

In 1943 Kubiyovych took part in organizing the Division SS-Galizien. As a head of the UCC, he revealed his organizer abilities. The division was organized as part of a program of creating foreign formations of the Waffen-SS to fight on the Eastern Front. The formal organizer of the division was Otto von Wächter, the Nazi governor of Galicia. The formation was announced on 28 April 1943. Kubiyovych was regarding the division as a Ukrainian force and was hoping to influence its essence and structure as the core of a future national army.

In 1944, Kubiyovych escaped to West Germany and later moved to France. He was the Shevchenko Scientific Society's Secretary General from 1947 to 1963, and, from 1952, President of its European branch. He became the Society's honorary member in 1981. In 1949, Kubiyovych became the chief editor of the Encyclopædia of Ukraine, later the editor of Ukraine: A Concise Encyclopædia published in English (in two volumes) in 1963 and 1971.

Volodymyr Kubiyovych died on 2 November, 1985 in Paris.
