Criminal Minds is an American police procedural thriller television series created by Jeff Davis. It premiered on September 22, 2005, on the broadcast network CBS, and is produced by The Mark Gordon Company, in association with CBS Television Studios and ABC Studios. Criminal Minds is set primarily at the FBI's Behavioral Analysis Unit (BAU) based in Quantico, Virginia, and in accordance with the show's plot, Criminal Minds differs from many procedural dramas by focusing on profiling the criminal, called the unsub or "unknown subject", rather than the actual crime itself. The focal point of the series follows a talented group of FBI profilers who set about catching various criminals through behavioral profiling. The plot focuses on the team working cases and the personal lives of the characters, depicting the hardened life and statutory requirements of a profiler. On May 11, 2015, CBS renewed the show for an eleventh season that premiered on September 30, 2015.[1]

Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior is an American police procedural drama starring Forest Whitaker and Janeane Garofalo that aired on CBS. The show debuted in February 2011 as a spin-off from the successful Criminal Minds, which itself had premiered in September 2005. This edition's profiling team also worked for the Federal Bureau of Investigation's Behavioral Analysis Unit (BAU) in Quantico, Virginia. In an April 2010 episode of Criminal Minds ("The Fight"), during the show's fifth season, the original team met the new team and worked with them to find a San Francisco serial killer, with the episode serving as the new series' backdoor pilot.Just like the parent series, CBS owned the underlying North American rights, while ABC owned the international rights. The series premiered on February 16, 2011 and filled the Wednesday 10:00pm time slot, airing immediately after the original Criminal Minds.[2] Due to low ratings, CBS canceled the series on May 17, 2011, and aired its final episode eight days later.[3] On September 6, 2011, CBS released the complete series as a four-disc set, packaged as "The DVD Edition." There are numerous special features and two episode commentaries with the cast and crew. The set includes the backdoor pilot from season five of the original show.

Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders is an American police procedural series created by Erica Messer that airs on CBS and is produced by The Mark Gordon Company in association with CBS Television Studios and ABC Studios. The production is a spin-off from the successful Criminal Minds series, and follows an elite team of FBI agents solving cases that involve American citizens on international soil.[4] CBS aired a backdoor pilot on an episode of Criminal Minds on April 8, 2015, and introduced the characters with a crossover episode eponymously titled "Beyond Borders".[4][5] The series was originally intended to premiere on March 2, 2016, but was pushed back by two weeks and premiered on March 16, 2016, and filled the Wednesday 10:00pm time slot, airing immediately after the original Criminal Minds.[6]

When the series premiered in September 2005, it featured FBI Agents Jason Gideon, Aaron Hotchner, Elle Greenaway, Derek Morgan, Spencer Reid, Jennifer Jareau (J.J.), and Penelope Garcia. For season one, Garcia was not a main cast member, but rather was a recurring role despite appearing in most episodes. In 2006, at the start of season two, Lola Glaudini announced her departure from the show, as she was unhappy living in Los Angeles, where the show is filmed, and wished to return home to New York City.[7] Paget Brewster replaced her in the role of Emily Prentiss.

At the start of season three, Mandy Patinkin announced his departure from the show, because he was deeply disturbed by the content depicted in the show.[8] He left letters of apology for his fellow cast members, explaining his reasons and wishing them luck. Joe Mantegna replaced him as David Rossi, a best-selling author and FBI agent who comes out of retirement. During season three, A.J. Cook became pregnant with her first child. Her pregnancy was written into the show, and Cook's real-life son, Mekhai Andersen, has had a recurring role as Jennifer's son Henry. Cook's void was filled by Meta Golding, who played Jordan Todd, an FBI agent who works with the agency's Counter Terrorism Unit. In season six, Jennifer is forced to accept a promotion at The Pentagon, causing her to leave the BAU.

Later that season, Emily is seemingly killed off and, although she actually survives, she does not make an appearance for the rest of the season. They were both replaced by Rachel Nichols as Ashley Seaver, an FBI cadet. CBS's decision to release Cook and Brewster from their contracts caused numerous angry letters sent from the fans to the studio as well as signing of petitions. As a result, Cook and Brewster were rehired by CBS into their roles as Jennifer Jareau and Emily Prentiss respectively, which caused Nichols to be fired from the show.[9][10] In February 2012, Brewster announced her departure from the show after the seventh season,[11] and was replaced the following season by Jeanne Tripplehorn, who played Alex Blake, a linguistics expert.[12] Paget Brewster made a special guest appearance in the series' ninth season, reprising as Emily Prentiss.

After two seasons, Tripplehorn was let go from the show[13][14] and Jennifer Love Hewitt joined the cast as Kate Callahan, a former undercover FBI agent who then joins the BAU.[15] During season ten, Mandy Patinkin's role as Jason Gideon was killed off-screen, permanently ending any chance for Patinkin to return.[16] Following the conclusion of season ten, Hewitt and Cook announced that they'll both be on hiatus from the show due to their pregnancies. Hewitt will return in season twelve,[17] while Cook returned after the first five episodes of season eleven.[18]

Later that season, Shemar Moore, who plays Derek Morgan, left the show.

In early 2009, Michael Ausiello from Entertainment Weekly said that he and studios were discussing the possibility of a spin-off of the procedural crime drama Criminal Minds. Studio Producer Ed Bernero confirmed it by disclosing that "it's safe to say there will be something soon." The show had a completely new cast, with the exception of Kirsten Vangsness, who reprised her role as Penelope Garcia. By late 2010, the director had been chosen, and the casting completed.[19] It was announced that Forest Whitaker would star. Whitaker's character, Samuel "Sam" "Coop" Cooper, and his team were introduced in Criminal Minds Season 5.[20][21] Richard Schiff had a recurring role as FBI Director Jack Fickler.[22]

Samuel Cooper and his team set the stage for the spin-off in the 18th episode of the fifth season of Criminal Minds, "The Fight"[23] (April 7, 2010). This "back-door pilot" approach was also used for other CBS shows that were introduced in original series, such as CSI: Miami (2002-2012), CSI: NY (2004-2013) and NCIS: Los Angeles. Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior was the first cancellation of CBS remakes and CSI: NY was picked up for an eighth season in its place.

A proposed new series in the Criminal Minds franchise was announced in January 2015, and was to be named Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders. Gary Sinise and Anna Gunn had been cast in the lead roles of Jack Garrett and Lily Lambert, with Tyler James Williams and Daniel Henney being cast as Russ "Monty" Montgomery and Matthew "Matt" Simmons, respectively.

On May 11, 2015, CBS announced that Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders, has been picked up for the 2015–16 season, however, it was soon announced that Gunn had departed the series,[24] with Alana de la Garza and Annie Funke further being cast as series regulars.[25]
