Flordon is both a civil parish and a village in South Norfolk, England. It is situated approximately 9 mi (14 km) south of Norwich.

The village's name means 'Floor / pavement hill'; the significance of 'flor' is unknown.

Geography

The parish of Flordon covers an area of 1.44 sq mi (3.7 km2) and had a population of 263 in 110 households at the 2001 Census,[1] which rose to 281 in the 2011 Census.[2] This represents only a modest increase on the 178 people who were registered in the 1881 census.

Flordon borders the villages of Wreningham, Bracon Ash, Mulbarton and Newton Flotman to the north; to the south, it borders Hapton, Tasburgh and Long Stratton.

Local features

The village contains, amongst other things, protected common land on which can be found a spring and rare plants. [citation needed]

Until 1920, Flordon had a mill on the river Tas [1].

Taswood Lakes lie just to the east of the village.

Flordon Hall is also in the vicinity. A mile east of Flordon is Rainthorpe Hall a Grade I listed Elizabethan manor house, owned at one time by Frederick Walpole, MP for North Norfolk.[3]

Transport

The site of the former railway station

The nearest railway station is in Norwich. Until it was closed in 1966, Flordon had its own railway station which was served by stopping services between Ipswich and Norwich. The line is still in operation, hosting inter-city services to London Liverpool Street.

Flordon is located 2 mi (3.2 km) west of the A140 road, which connects Cromer and Norwich with Ipswich.
