Jean Baechler
Jean Baechler; 28 March 1937 in Thionville (Moselle)[1] – 13 August 2022 in Draveil, was a French academic and sociologist[2].
Full professor and later emeritus of historical sociology at the Sorbonne[3], he was a member of the Académie des sciences morales et politiques, elected on December 6, 1999 in the Morale et Sociologie section to the seat vacated by the transfer of Alain BesançonAlain Besançon[4].
President of the Académie Française and Institut de France for 2011[4] [5].
Biography
Graduating in philosophy and history in University of Strasbourg and Doctor in Sociology from Sorbonne University, Jean Baechler has devoted much of his life to teaching and research. He began his career as a history-geography teacher at the Lycée Montesquieu in Le Mans (1962-1966), where he defended a thesis (Les suicides) under the supervision of Raymond Aron. From 1966 to 1969, he was a lecturer in sociology at the Sorbonne, then a lecturer in sociology at the EHESS (1968-1986). From 1975 to 2006, he was seminar leader for the DEA in sociology at Paris IV, Paris V and Paris X. In 1988, he became Professor of Historical Sociology at Paris IV-Sorbonne. At the same time, he was attached to (1966), then in charge of (1969), then director of research at the CNRS (1977-1988), in the sociology section.[6].
He was also a member of the Centre européen de sociologie historique directed by Raymond Aron (1969-1984) and, from 1984, belonged to the Groupe d'études des méthodes de l'analyse sociologique (GEMAS) founded by Raymond Boudon in Sorbonne's Sociology Department[2].
Since June 2006, Jean Baechler has ceased all teaching activities. He now devotes his time to editing and publishing his work, much of which was developed during his seminars. He is Honorary Chairman of the Philotechnic Association [2].
