Neville Tuli (born 24 April 1964, England UK) is a pioneering author[1], curator[2] and archivist[3], active in the field of Arts and Cultural Heritage in India.

Early life and education

He was born in India.[4] He studied at the London School of Economics and St. Catherine's College University of Oxford; and lived a major part of his life in England. He returned to India in 1993.[5][6][7]

Published work and critical reception

The Flamed Mosaic: Indian Contemporary Painting

In 1997 he wrote a book The Flamed Mosaic: Indian Contemporary Painting,[8] on the aesthetics and history of Indian Modern & Contemporary Painting in April 1997.[9]

Shivaji Pannikar in his book 'Towards a New Art History: studies in Indian art' referred to The Flamed Mosaic as the first comprehensive book written on Indian painting.[10][11]

Ratan Parimoo's review of the book in Asia Art Archive referred to the book as 'substantial' and 'topical'. Parimoo wrote, "This book therefore is part of the international recognition and significance of contemporary Indian Art, in the lavish format in which it has been produced."[12]

Martin Kämpchen in his review published in Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung said "One must be grateful for the compilation of the historical factual material, especially for the biographical outlines and the extensive bibliography on Indian painting. Tuli also introduces the majority of the painters through interviews; their works are illuminated by excerpts from essays and monographs."[13]

Other Writings and Interviews

Neville collaborated with The Hindu in 1999 and interviewed contemporary Indian artist Dr Gieve Patel[14] and historian, Professor Shadakshari Settar.[15] The interviews were published as a series of 4 articles and laid out the need for creating infrastructure for art in India.[16][17]

Career

Tuli Research Centre for India Studies (TRIS)

Tuli founded TRIS in 2023 with the goal of sharing his knowledge base, archives and library in disciplines such as arts, cinema and more. TRIS organized its inaugural exhibition in March 2024, 'Self-Discovery via Rediscovering India' at the India International Centre Gallery (New Delhi) that showcased selected artifacts, digitized artworks, archives and memorabilia from the research center.[18][19]

Osianama

In 2013 Tuli and Osian's launched a website called osianama.com, containing information on Indian art along with a special search engine meant for Indian art.[20][21][22][23]

Osian's Connoisseurs of Art

Neville Tuli establishes an auction house called Osian's Connoisseurs of Art in the year 2000.[24] Osian's Connoisseurs of Art began to hold regular art auctions since 2000. Osian's has held over 40 Auctions during the past two decades. The organization widened the scope of India's contemporary arts' secondary market. In the process, the auctions gave a market to artists such as Nikhil Biswas, Chittaprasad, Broota, Gade, Bijon Choudhury, Biren De, Ambadas, Chitravanu Mazumdar, Panicker, J Sultan Ali, Shanti Dave, Rabin Mondal, and Prokash Karmakar among many other artists.[25]It also began an "International quality Auctions and Art Advisory Services" for the authentication, certification and valuation for Indian Contemporary Art along with an Art Index.[26]

In 2002, a sensational new market and awareness for the popular arts, especially film memorabilia was created when it was placed on the same platform as Indian contemporary arts with the auction – A Historical Mela: The ABC of India.[27]

In August 2002, Tuli organized an exhibited-auction titled 'A Historical Epic: India in the Making will document the freedom struggle from 1757 to 1950 - Surrender to Revolt, Swaraj to Responsibility' that consisted of Rare Books, Photographs, Popular Calendar Art, Oleographs, Engravings, Show Cards of Indian Cinema Etchings and Lithographs, Song-Synopsis Booklets, Vintage Posters, Lobby Cards, Indian modern and contemporary art. Neville described this exhibition as an "ongoing process of restructuring the manner by which the fine arts and its aesthetics, history and finance mesh to build a new and sustainable infrastructure for placing the arts in the developmental framework of India."[28] The exhibition uniquely presented the film posters on an equal platform as fine arts - ascribing value to an otherwise torn, defaced or forgotten film poster.[29]

In 2013, he organized an auction of sports memorabilia, of Indian cricket memorabilia in Mumbai, which successfully sold 73 out of 100 lots for a handsome rupees 36 lakhs. Extending its aim of preserving cultural heritage and history into the sporting arena with this first-of-its-kind auction.[30][31]

In 2014, he organized an exhibition and auction of artworks of Indian & Asian arts, antiquities, books, prints, photographs and film memorabilia, which had been inspired by animals.[32][33]

Osian's Cinemaya

Cinemaya - a New Delhi based film magazine founded by Aruna Vasudev in 1988 dedicated to Asian cinema was purchased by Osian's Connoisseurs of Art in 2004 and was retitled as Osian's Cinemaya. Vasudev continued to edit the magazine after the purchase.[34]Cinemaya was the world's first journal exclusively dedicated to Asian Cinema to broaden its cinema-infrastructure base and to complement its vast cinema archives.[35]

Osian's Cinefan

The Cinemaya deal also included the Cinefan festival - renamed Osian's Cinefan, which was in its 5th year at the time; similar to the arrangement at the magazine, Vasudev continued as the festival director.[34][36][37][38]

Osian art fund

Also see Osian art fund

In 2008, the SEBI commenced litigation against osian due to its not having filed any papers for the art fund (Osian countered that their art fund did not fall under SEC's purview). In 2011, as investors from India and Dubai realized that they would not get their promised returns and were in danger of losing their principal, they started to file suits against Osian's art fund in Mumbai and in London.[39]

As of 2017, Osian's continues to function through its New Delhi office.[40]

Durand Cup

Osian became the title sponsor for Durand Cup in 2007 and signed a 5 year contract[41] to co-host the cup and revive the interest in the game[42][43][44]

The Tuli Foundation for Holistic Education & Art (HEART)

In 1996, Tuli established a trust called "HEART" (The Tuli Foundation for Holistic Education & Art)[4] Its stated aim was "to help build a quality-conscious infrastructure for the Indian fine arts".

HEART started with a curated exhibition titled "The Intuitive Logic: A Festival of Indian Contemporary Painting". The exhibition evolved into a series of non-commercial exhibitions in New Delhi and Mumbai in collaboration with The British Council, Max Mueller Bhavan (now knowns as Goethe Institut), Cymroza Art Gallery, Gallery Chemould, Pundole Gallery and Prithvi Gallery.[6]

"The Intuitive-logic II", the first curated auction, established record prices for many artists including Raja Ravi Varma whose painting - Begum's Bath,[45] fetched Rs. 32 lacs,[46][47][24] the highest price ever for a modern Indian painting then - also recorded in Limca book of records.[48]
