[edit]Hi. I have today activated the References section and categorised the article. I have also removed all but the historical mentions of "linesmen". As this term no longer has any present place in football terminology, it shouldn't feature so prominently in an article entitled Assistant referee (football), except to pay lip-service to its past use.
Please also note that, as part of the merge, it will be required to use "What links here" to correct all the links to the previous article which should redirect to this new article. This is because a redirect cannot be made of the old page, due to its current information regarding its ice hockey connotations. Unless you create a new article "Assistant referee (ice hockey)", but then which of the two new articles do you redirect to? Ref (chew)(do) 18:22, 28 February 2008 (UTC)
- I have fixed the above linking nightmare by completing the merge of "Assistant referee#Ice Hockey" into "Official (ice hockey)" as proposed. This means that "Assistant referee" is now a redirect to this article. I have also completed the redirecting of Fourth and Fifth official pages after merge to the article. Thanks. Requested move
[edit]Assistant referee (association football) → Assistant referee – Assistant referee is currently a redirect to this article. I am pretty sure that under WP:NC or WP:DIS this is a no-no, because there is no other article titled Assistant referee (anything). Some posts above indicate that 6 years ago there may have been some controversy over "assistant referees" in ice hockey, but the Official (ice hockey) article states that in that sport, only some leagues give an official that title. In football/soccer, "assistant referee" is the formal title used in the English version of the FIFA Laws of the Game, and judging from the lack of any other article or even any redirect related to this title, I think it's safe to say that the football/soccer concept is the primary topic for this title. If the move takes place, I do believe this article needs a hatnote that reads something along the lines of: This article is about assistant referees in association football. For referees' assistants in other sports, which might formally be known by a variety of different names, see Referee. —KuyaBriBriTalk 17:18, 5 March 2014 (UTC)
- Comment: In 2008, the pages Assistant referee, Assistant referee (association football), Fourth official and Fifth official were all merged. I'm not sure why it was decided that the merged article would reside at Assistant referee (association football) instead of Assistant referee. Either way, all these page histories will have to be preserved (possibly by doing a WP:SWAP?). Zzyzx11 (talk) 06:04, 6 March 2014 (UTC)
- Oppose soccer isn't the only sport with an assistant referee. It should redirect to the referee article. -- 70.50.151.11 (talk) 06:30, 6 March 2014 (UTC)
- Either support or change the redirect. Red Slash 20:17, 15 March 2014 (UTC)
Requested move
[edit]I request that the article be moved to 'Other match officials (association football)' since the article does not exclusively cover assistant referees, with the official terminology from the Laws of the Game instead required.
