Shounak Roy (born in December, 2006) is an Indian classical sarod player. He is the youngest disciple[1] of Legendary Sarod Maestro Pandit Buddhadev Dasgupta (Padma Bhushan Awardee). Shounak is presently a Scholar of ITC Sangeet Research Academy under Guru Sri Abir Hossain..

Shounak Roy is being felicitated by the Hon'ble Governor of Tripura, India - Shri Nallu Indrasena Reddy.

Shounak had been felicitated by the Hon'ble Governor of Tripura, Shri Indrasena Reddy Nallu for his mesmerizing Sarod performance in the Hanuman Jayanti Festival at Swami Dhananjoy Das Kathia Baba Mission College, Agartala,Tripura, India.

Shounak is amongst the 50 young talented musicians selected Nationwide to receive Sri Shanmukhananda Bharat Ratna Dr. M.S. Subbulakshmi Fellowship in Music from Sri Shanmukhananda Fine Arts & Sangeetha Sabha, Mumbai, India[2].

Shounak is a recipient of The Telegraph Online Edugraph 18 under 18 Award – 2024[3] from The Telegraph online Edugraph for his remarkable achievements in the field of Art and Culture (Indian Classical Instrumental Music – Sarod) under the Age Group of 18 years, wherein 18 best candidates from different disciplines across Eastern India including West Bengal, Odisha, Bihar, Jharkhand, Sikkim, Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh were awarded.

Shounak Roy won the The Telegraph School Awards for Excellence - Anirban Sinha Award in 2023[4], where he was honoured with a gold medal for his outstanding talent in Indian Classical Music, specifically in the instrumental category of Sarod.

Shounak Roy has set records in the India Book of Records[5] and the Asia Book of Records [6]in 2024 for playing non-stop Musical String Instrument - Sarod for the longest duration of 4 hrs 45 mins and 31 secs covering 32 different Ragas of Indian Classical Music.

Shounak has also won the following prestigious awards in music with his sarod presentation like The Doverlane Music Conference Talent Search Contest – 2023[7], The Swara Samrat Festival - SSF Championship 2020-21[8], in the name of Legendary Sarod Maestro Swara Samrat Late Ustad Ali Akbar Khan. Shounak stood first at the All India Music Competition, KBR Bimalarpan Sangeet Mahotsav (Chattisgarh) – Sanyogita 2021[9], organised by Team Bhilai Anthem and Welfare Society Bhilai in the name of Acharya Bimalendu Mukherjee.

Notable Performances

Shounak has performed Sarod in various National and International platforms like, performance at KBR Bimalarpan Sangeet Mahotsav organised by Team Bhilai Anthem and Welfare Society, Bhilai in association with Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) - Bhilai Steel Plant, Indira Kala Sangit Vishwavidyalaya (IKSV), Khairagarh, Chhattisgarh and South-Central Zone Cultural Centre, Ministry of Culture, Government of India.

Shounak performed sarod at the Bay Area Music Circle, BARKELEY- CA ,USA, he performed at ANDAZ E MEJAAJ, and Friday Evening Ragas-Viewcy International , performed sarod at The Telegraph 18 Under 18 Awards Ceremony, presented sarod rendition at Kishalay - Sangeet Piyasi, Kolkata, he performed at X-UBERANCE' 23 at St. Xavier's Collegiate School - Kolkata, performed Sarod Jugalbandi at the Basant Ki Bahar - Music Concert organized by SwarDarbar[10] and at the Vistar Music Conference, Shounak also took part with Sarod in the Documentary film Swabhiman Bharat by NETWORK-18, CNN NEWS-18.
