The solo discography of Japanese singer-songwriter and musician Gen Hoshino consists of five original studio albums, two extended plays (EPs), five live albums, nineteen compilations, twenty-two singles,[A] seven promotional singles, and thirty-four music videos (counting works as featured artist). In Japan, two of Hoshino's studio albums and five of his singles have topped the record charts published by Oricon and Billboard Japan. As of February 2024, the Recording Industry Association of Japan (RIAJ) has awarded Hoshino two "million", fourteen platinum, and seventeen gold certifications, totalling 5.65 million pure sales and 500 million streams.
Hoshino debuted as the frontman of the instrumental band Sakerock (2000–2015), playing guitar and marimba. He self-released a CD-R entitled Baka no Uta in 2005, and in 2007 released a CD entitled Barabara as a bundle to a booklet by photographer Taro Hirano.[4][5][6] After being approached by Haruomi Hosono of Yellow Magic Orchestra and his label Daisyworld, Hoshino released his debut studio album Baka no Uta in June 2010, re-using the title of the 2005 CD-R.[7] A joint release by Daisyworld's Labels United, Victor Entertainment's Speedstar Records, and the Sakerock-signed Kakubarhythm,[B] the album charted at number thirty-six on the Oricon Albums Chart.[11] After Hoshino's debut on the Billboard Japan Hot 100 with "Kudaranai no Naka ni" (2011) at number twelve,[12] the follow-up album Episode was released solely by Speedstar on September 28, 2011, and charted at number five.[13][14]
Throughout 2012, Hoshino released his next three singles – all charting within the top five – in promotion of his third album, Stranger (2013). The album peaked at number two on both national charts and was certified Gold in 2017.
In 2015, Hoshino released the single "Sun"–it reached number two on the weekly charts and was certified 3× Platinum in digital sales and Gold in physical sales, Hoshino's first release to receive a certification. The following album, Yellow Dancer (2015), became his first number one on the albums charts and was certified Platinum within one month, finishing sixth on Billboard's year-end album chart for 2016.[15] The album's corresponding tour's live album, Live Tour: Yellow Voyage (2017), earned Hoshino his first top spot on the Blu-ray and DVD charts. Hoshino reached the top of the songs charts with his next single and The Full-Time Wife Escapist ending theme "Koi" (2016), which was certified by the RIAJ for two million digital sales. In 2023, it ranked 5th on the Billboard Japan Hot 100 all-time chart.[16] Hoshino would stay on top of the weekly charts with his following singles "Family Song" (2017), "Idea" (2018), and "Doraemon" (2018), all of which were also certified Platinum. "Idea", a digital-exclusive release, became the first song in history to chart two consecutive weeks on top of the Hot 100 without a physical release.[17] Hoshino's fifth and most recent album, Pop Virus (2018), charted at number one and was certified double Platinum.
Hoshino released a debut digital download EP, Same Thing, in 2019, reaching number four on Oricon's Combined Albums Chart. He would follow the EP with non-album singles such as the number-two charting "Fushigi" and "Create" (2020). His Spy × Family ending theme "Comedy" (2022) reached number 127 on the Billboard Global 200, his first entry onto the international chart.
