Despre tine number one hit[1]
- band made up of Dan Balan, Radu Sirbu and Arsenie Todoras[2]
- successes with "Numai tu" and "Despre tine"[2]
- Responsabili de succes sunt Dan Balan, Radu Alexei Sarbu si Arsenie Todieras. Povestea a inceput in 1999, in Republica Moldova (Chisinau).
- O-Zone had plans to dismember and recorded separate versions of Dragostea din tei
- but were convinced by Cat Music to reunite after Haiducii's version gained recognition[5]
Release
A CD of "Dragostea din tei" was first released in Romania in 2003 by Cat Music, also containing the music videos of O-Zone's previous singles "Numai tu" (2002) and "Despre tine" (2002).[6][2] The label went on to issue a remix album on 3 June 2003 for digital download.[7] Throughout 2004, "Dragostea din tei" was physically released in several other countries, including France,[8] Germany,[9] Italy,[10] the Netherlands,[11] Spain,[12] the United Kingdom and the United States.[13][14] In the latter territory, Ultra Records issued two 12-inch vinyls that included "Ma Ya Hi", an English language-version of "Dragostea din tei" featuring American musician Lucas Prata, which only credits Dan Balan as the lead artist.[14][15] The original Romanian version was digitally released in the United States on 22 June 2004 by Media Services, under the name of "Mai Ai Hee (Dragostea din tei)".[16] In 2005, a CD of "Dragostea din tei" was issued in Japan by Avex Trax, titled "恋のマイアヒ" ("Koi No Maiahi").[17]
"Dragostea din tei" was included on O-Zone's third studio album DiscO-Zone (2003).[2][18] As part of the 2004 international re-release of "Despre tine", "Dragostea din tei" was featured as the B-side on CDs released in selected regions.[19]
- Their recording was released by local indie Media Services and then licensed internationally to Italian dance specialist Time, which in turn has licensed it to various companies around Europe, including Jive in the United Kingdom, Island in Germany and Happy Music in France[20]
- exists at least from July 2003[21]
- August 2003: Balan registered "Dragostea din Tei" at UCMR-ADA (Uniunea Compozitorilor si Muzicologilor din Romania - Asociatia Drepturilor de Autor)[22]
- O-Zone managed by Media Services in Romania
- For abroad management, O-Zone wanted to sing a deal with Hit Mania in UK before settling on Italian Time Records
- O-Zone signed with Time for almost 100,000 euros
- multiple labels from Italy wanted O-Zone after Haiducii's version became popular[26]
Composition
- distinctive yodeling vocal line[20]
- Novelty song[27]
- Dance-pop[2]
- You've probably heard it--think relentless Euro disco, and the phonetic phrase "Numa numa yay."[30]
- colloquially known as “the Numa Numa song”
- Dan Bălan has hinted that the Romanian smash is about losing his virginity “under the linden trees.”[31]
- robotic stop-start rhythms[31]
- Tempering the less-pronounceable Romanian lyrics with memorable ‘mai-ai-hii‘ nonsense helped “Dragostea Din Tei” conquer Europe in 2004[31]
- a translation into English reveals they’re either nonsense, or – according to one imaginative online interpretation – about ejaculation[33]
- The Numa Numa song that started the whole fad is the kind of thing Eurotrash would regard as manna from heaven: a Moldovan Europop track called Dragostea din tei, by O-Zone.[33]
- O-Zone’s dizzy yodeling[34]
- "Alo, salut!"[36]
- Summer anthem
- What unites most of them through the last couple of decades is that they’re energetic and at least sound upbeat, even when they’re not. Also crucial: give summer revelers something catchy, no matter how mindless, to sing along with.
- “Ma-ia hii! Ma-ia huu! Ma-ia hoo! Ma-ia haha.” Sung in falsetto
- it leaps all language barriers in a single bound and allows everyone to feel like a star[37]
- "Dragostea din tei" as part of their style: disco retro, sound european din anii 80s[38]
- 80s Europop[39]
Critical reception and accolades
- It wobbles unsteadily along the line that separates catchy from infuriating[33]
- an extremely cheesy Romanian-language dance-pop tune,
- The weirdly addictive song[34]
- The “Dragostea Din Tei” video featured the hairgelled-up Euro-dudes of O-Zone dancing on a plane’s wing while its engines turned into giant CGI speakers.[34]
- "anspruchslos", Dj Ötzi, "simpler Unterhaltungsmusik"[40]
- 2023 study conducted by Compare the Market Australia for the most distracting driving songs: Taking the top spot with a whopping distraction score of 78.76%; based on BPM, energy score, danceability, and loudness[41]
- compared coexisting versions to Los del Rio and Los del Mar[24]
- Lionel Cossin of Pure Charts compared to Chihuahua of DJ Bobo[24]
- Petre Dobrescu from Libertatea criticized the lyrics for being nonsense, doar "de dragul rimei"[21]
- Cand auzi „Alo, alo, sunt iarasi eu, Picasso/Ti-am dat beep si sunt voinic/ Dar sa stii nu-ti cer nimic”, te gandesti imediat la Nena (cantareata in voga in anii ’80 – n.r.), la Eurovision sau la o greseala de traducere!”[39]
Commercial performance
"Dragostea din tei" first attained commercial success in Romania, where it held the number-one position for three weeks on the Romanian Top 100 in September 2003,[42] effectively becoming the band's second chart topper after "Despre tine" earlier that year.[1] In the March of 2004, the song reached number 17 on the Italian singles chart.[43] One month later, "Dragostea din tei" debuted at number one in Spain, reclimbing to the chart's top position on two more occasions in May and June 2004.[44] In April 2004, "Dragostea din tei" further topped the French chart, holding that spot for 15 consecutive weeks.[45] It was certified diamond in the region by Syndicat national de l'édition phonographique (SNEP),[46] and amassed sales of 1,170,000 copies as of September 2014, amounting for the fourth-most in the 21st century.[47]
From June to August 2004, the song impacted several other territories. It reached number one in all DACH countries, holding that position for 14 weeks in Germany and Switzerland,[48][49] and for 13 weeks in Austria.[50] In the former, it was certified double platinum by Bundesverband Musikindustrie (BVMI).[51] In the Netherlands, the song topped the Dutch Single Top 100.[52] "Dragostea din tei" was also successful in Nordic countries, becoming a number-one hit in Norway and Denmark,[53][54] as well as peaking at numbers two and three in Finland and Sweden, respectively.[55][56] The song further topped Billboard's European Hot 100 Singles chart for 12 weeks,[57] at one point being followed by Haiducii's version at number two and "Le poulailler" by Le 6/9 at number 18.[58] "Dragostea din tei" peaked at numbers one, two and three in Ireland,[59] Scotland and the United Kingdom,[60][61] respectively, while the Unu' in the Dub Mix peaked at number nine on the radio airplay chart in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS).[62] The song topped the 2004 year-end charts in Austria,[63] Europe,[64] France,[65] Germany,[66] Netherlands and Switzerland, among others.[67][68]
In the United States, the Lucas Prata remix reached number 14 on Billboard's Dance/Mix Show Airplay chart at the end of August 2004, however it was not until March 2005 that the song peaked at number 16 on the Bubbling Under Hot 100, as well as at positions 69 and 72 on the Digital Song Sales and Pop 100 rankings, respectively.[69][70] It was eventually certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).[71] The original version of "Dragostea din tei" peaked at number 72 on the Japanese Oricon Singles Chart in June 2005, with the song being awarded quadruple million, platinum and gold certifications by the Recording Industry Association of Japan (RIAJ) across multiple formats.[72] As of October 2005, "Dragostea din tei" has sold in excess of eight million copies worldwide.[30] It stands as the third-most successful song of the 2000s in Germany.[73]
- 500,000 units shipped in Europe by June 2004[20]
- At one point, it was Japan's best-selling digital single with 4 mil units until 2007 "Flavor of Life" by Utada[74]
- over 12 million copies as reported by Adevarul[76]
- over 250,000 copies sold in Romania[24]
- O-Zone, Haiducii and parodies by Massimo (Fun Radio) and "6-9" programme of NRJ[77]

Haiducii
- Paula Mitrache a inregistrat aceasta piesa la SIAE; this was an impediment in O-Zone's bid to commercialize their version in Italy
- As of 10 March 2004, no lawsuit; Insa, cum autorul piesei primeste drepturi de autor, Dan Balan s-a imbogatit peste noapte cu ajutorul Paulei Mitrache[88]
Popoiag
- Dan Balan sued for defamamtion
- Judecatoria Sectorului 2 Bucuresti: Bogdan Popoiag of Unu needs to pay daune morale 60 milioane de lei to Dan Balan for having claimed to be the songwriter
- in realitate, Bogdan Popoiag a fost angajat de casa de discuri a trupei O-Zone, Media Services/Cat Music, pentru a realiza orchestratia piesei, iar la un an dupa lansare, in 2004, cand piesa a devenit hit international, a declansat un scandal pretinzand ca ar fi si compozitorul acesteia
- ca va dona suma incasata unui tanar care va castiga premiul pentru cea mai buna compozitie muzicala in cadrul unuia dintre concursurile organizate anul acesta in Romania.[89][90]
- Popoiag filed a lawsuit against Dan Balan and Media Services
- claims to have composed the song in March 2003
- further claims to have done the mastering
- claims only the text is Balan's, but that Popiag has only been credited as a producer on the cover[91]
- Popoiag sued in September 2004[92]
- Popiag failed to present evidence of his contribution[93]
- Popoiag played phone recordings of Dan Balan la OTV[94]

Critical reception
Commercial performance
Haiducii's version of "Dragostea din tei" impacted the charts in several territories before the original version, including in Germany,[48][108] Italy,[43][109] Spain,[44][110] and France.[45][111] It debuted atop the Italian singles chart in January 2004, outpeaking the original.[43][109] It claimed the top position for a total of six weeks and remained within the top 10 for over four months.[43] In March 2004, Haiducii debuted and peaked at number four in Spain,[110] following which she reached numbers one and two, respectively, in Austria and France in April.[112][111] The song also reached number two in Wallonia in May 2004, being blocked from number one by the original.[113][114]
In June 2004, Haiducii reached number two in Germany—blocked by the original—and Switzerland,[108][49] as well as number four in Norway and number six in Flanders.[115][116] Throughout July, it was held back by O-Zone's version to peak atop the European Hot 100 Singles chart,[58] while also peaking at numbers four, five and seven in the Netherlands, Denmark and Hungary, respectively.[117][118][119] In Sweden, Haiducii topped the chart in August, outcharting the original.[56][120] It held the top spot for five weeks consecutive weeks and spent five months in the top ten.[120] For the year of 2004, Haiducii's version of "Dragostea din tei" ended within the top 10 of the best-performing singles in Austria,[63] Germany,[66] Italy,[121] Sweden,[122] Switzerland and Europe.[68][64] It was further awarded gold certifications in Austria,[123] Belgium,[124] France,[125] Sweden and Switzerland.[126][127] In Germany, the song stands as the 95th-most successful of the 2000s.[73]
- Haiducii version sold 200,000 copies in the first week of release in Italy[22]
Music video and promotion

- This particular brand of oontz-oontz sugar-rush house-pop was simply nowhere near the American mainstream in 2003, but when it was presented to us in the form of a 19-year-old chair-dancing on a low-res webcam, we couldn’t resist. Back then, nobody knew how to monetize that kind of viral fame, but people would soon figure it out. In 2008, when YouTube was still finding its legs as a cultural force, T.I. and Rihanna turned a “Dragostea Din Tei” sample into a global smash.
- On that podcast, Just says, “At a certain point, I started to strategize. This fat kid singing video has gone super-viral; everyone around the world has seen it. They’re automatically gonna hear that chant, and it’s gonna be familiar to them. That was definitely a Jedi mind trick of sorts.” A day after Just Blaze made the beat, T.I. called Just, telling him that he needed a record right away. Soon enough, Just Blaze’s joke-song became the biggest hit of his career.[34]

Links 3
- Today Show
- paid 1,000,000 dollars for chicken little feature[208]
- Siru states that they weren't remunerated for their work; everything went to Balan[209]
- certati inainte de piesa[210]
- reunited in Revelion 2019 at Piata Constitutiei[211]
- KSHMR Neversear 2022[212]
- Ziua Europei Piata Universitatii 9 May 2017[214]
- exists at least from July 2003
- Dupa ce au lansat sintagme celebre, in ton cu folclorul imbogatit de pe urma aparitiei telefoniei mobile, ca ,,nu-mi raspunzi la SMS,,, O-Zone continua in aceeasi traditie a nonsensurilor verbale ce a consacrat grupul
- Petre Dobrescu from Libertatea criticized the lyrics for being nonsense, doar "de dragul rimei"
- O-Zone had plans to dismember and recorded separate versions of Dragostea din tei
- but were convinced by Cat Music to reunite after Haiducii's version gained recognition[216]
- O-Zone signed with Time for almost 100,000 euros
- multiple labels from Italy wanted O-Zone after Haiducii's version became popular[217]
- 80s Europop
- The London News Review criticized the outfits of the singers
- Oare nu s-a distantat Romania indeajuns de anii ’80?
- Cand auzi „Alo, alo, sunt iarasi eu, Picasso/Ti-am dat beep si sunt voinic/ Dar sa stii nu-ti cer nimic”, te gandesti imediat la Nena (cantareata in voga in anii ’80 – n.r.), la Eurovision sau la o greseala de traducere!”[218]
- Just Dance 2017[219]
- Used in Trimuful iubirii telenovela[220]
- Stargate Universe[221]
- Lucas Prata version recorded in Milan
- Prata helped with the English translation
- Hello, Salut, It*s me your Duc-, dupa care continua astfel – -And I made something that*s real/ To show you how I feel/Hello, Hello, It*s me Picasso/I will paint my words of love/With your name of every wall
- allegedly author rights were given up by the members over a Mcdonalds menu before the success.[226]
- Universal Music Germany signed O-Zone because Haiducii lacked "Ostflair"
- (author and label execs say this) Trend where Artists from Eastern Europe are successful in Western countries, z.B. Ruslana Eurovision, t.a.tu
- auch EU-Erweiterung augumented this trend
- Wave of Trash Pop from Eastern Europe
- International jedoch wollte damals niemand seinen Hit hören.
- BVG used in a campaign for Arbeitskräfte and wrote different lyrics[231]
- 130 BPM
- A Minor[232]
- Radu Ștefan Bănică Te cunosc de undeva 16th season 2021[233]
