The Spectacular Spider-Man (entitled The Spectacular Spider-Man Animated Series) is an animated television series that premiered on March 8[1], 2008 during the Kids' WB programming block of The CW. It premiered with a one hour event consisting of two back-to-back episodes. [2] So far there are commitments to two seasons of 13 episodes each.[3]. The first season of The Spectacular Spider-Man will air for twelve consecutive weeks on KidsWB. [4]
Info
- The Spectacular Spider-Man was announced by Kids' WB Senior Vice President and General Manager Betsy McGowen and Sony Pictures Television Co-President Zack Van Amburg in March, 2007.
- The new series is being produced by Culver Entertainment. The series premiered on Kids' WB on The CW. It was announced at Comic-Con that it would premiere on March 1, 2008 (although the date was later changed to March 8) and will not be affected by the new agreement with 4Kids Entertainment.
Riding the crest of Sony's anticipated summer blockbuster Spider-Man 3, the new animated series picks up the original web-slinger's mythology at the beginning of his hero's journey, as a 16-year-old entering his junior year of high school. Having spent the summer engaging common criminals with his new-found powers, Peter Parker must conceal his secret identity while engaging a new level of terror - the multi-leveled pressures of teenage life at home and school while combating bigger, badder super-villains in the real world like Green Goblin, Doctor Octopus, Venom, and many more.
- According to writer Greg Weisman the timeline of the original Spider-Man story-arcs, which the series is based on, will be condensed in order to move the series forward and include such classic and important characters as Flash Thompson, Gwen Stacy, Mary Jane Watson, Betty Brant, Harry Osborn, Jean DeWolff, J. Jonah Jameson, Aunt May Parker, Joe 'Robbie' Robertson, and Liz Allan.
- The new series will not follow the same continuity as the Spider-Man film series.
- Concept art by Sean "Cheeks" Galloway presents an interpretation of the series' takes on a number of characters.[5]
- Greg Weisman says that the episodes will have three to four episode arcs for DVD release reasons. The tie-ins will be slight, but present. The first episode arc will feature Vulture, Hammerhead, The Enforcers, and Electro. Weisman wrote the first episode.[6]
- Hasbro will release a toy line of Action figures in April 2008.[7]
Trailer
The trailer features Spider-Man stopping a burglary. He watches the cops take the burglars into custody but is ambushed by Dr. Octopus (only his tentacles are seen). Spider-Man evades The Lizard's tail. He swings away, avoiding Electro's lightning bolts and pumpkin bombs thrown by the Green Goblin. The Vulture's shadow passes over him, then Sandman tries to hit him. He misses and breaks a nearby window, making separate reflections which Venom's symbiote oozes on.
