SpongeBob's Truth or Square is an extended SpongeBob SquarePants episode.. Prior to its premiere on November 6, 2009, it had SpongeBob SquarePants: The Great Escape or SpongeBob's The Great Escape as a working title; a book adaptation also refers to it as The Great Escape. The DVD release of the episode includes an extended director's cut, along with five exclusive episodes from the sixth season. [1]
Truth or Square is the first SpongeBob episode to be broadcast in 16:9 high-definition widescreen.
In Germany, the episode is titled Eiskalt Entwischt (which literally means Ice Cold Escape in English).
Intro
Unlike that used in the main series, the intro to Truth or Square is not animated, but rather a 30-second stop-motion sequence.
Replacements
- Pinapple: A rather realistic pineapple.
- Pirate: A fortune-telling booth-styled wooden pirate
- Spongebob: A picture of Spongebob
- Fish: A picture of a fish chasing spongebob
- Ending Note: Spongebob using his nose as a trombone instead of a flute
Plot
The Krusty Krab celebrates its "eleventy-seventh" (which would be 117 years) anniversary. SpongeBob, Patrick, Squidward, and Mr. Krabs accidentally get locked in the freezer before they have a chance to celebrate. While finding their way through air shafts, they look back at some memorable moments in their lives. Meanwhile, Plankton finally finds the perfect opportunity to steal the Krabby Patty Secret formula. Some flashbacks that were shown were: footage of SpongeBob as a baby, the first Krusty Krab commercials, how SpongeBob first came across his pineapple house, SpongeBob and Sandy getting married (fake marriage), and Spongebob's first Krabby Patty when his mom was pregnant.[1]
Patchy the Pirate subplot
In a Patchy the Pirate subplot (the first in the series since Atlantis Squarepantis in 2007), Patchy goes to Nickelodeon Studios in Burbank and is told to wait. While he waits the devil Potty tells him to call celebrities onto his show as guests. The angel Potty attempts to improvise him, but fails as Patchy decides to follow the Devil Potty's path. Throughout a few parts of the show he attempts calling numerous celebrities but they refused to go on because of something that they had to do (i.e. gig, TV show, etc.). Patchy tries to trap the celebrities in the Green Room, but they later leave; P!nk sings "We've Got Scurvy" while they wait. After a while on his show (not in the Green Room), SpongeBob is unable to come. So, to save him, he sets sail and attempts to find him. As Patchy arrives at Bikini Atoll (the island near Bikini Bottom), a whale eats him. So, without SpongeBob, Patchy watches fake openings (including Squidward Tentacles, Patrick Star and Mr. Krabs) and a 1920s cartoon of SpongeBob going to work. The whale sneezes Patchy out, concluding the subplot. He dreams about finding SpongeBob and then, Abraham Lincoln wakes Patchy up and thought that he never found SpongeBob, which was all a dream. Abraham Lincoln found SpongeBob, leaving Patchy back to sleep.
Celebrity cameos
Several celebrity stars appeared as themselves "Truth or Square". They include Will Ferrell, Craig Ferguson, Robin Williams, Tina Fey, Rosario Dawson, LeBron James, P!nk, Triumph the Insult Comic Dog and more.[2]
Trivia
This article contains a list of miscellaneous information. (November 2009) |
- Prior to the episode's broadcast, there were rumors about the Krabby Patty formula being revealed. But this was proved false because in a flashback while Plankton was trying to get some ink out of his pen, he was suddenly thrown away. The formula was not shown as rumors had told.
- The special was #1 entertainment in cable ratings with 7.7 million viewers and had higher demographics than "The Jay Leno Show".
Books
In September 2009, two books based on the episode were released: SpongeBob SquarePants: The Great Escape and SpongeBob SquarePants: Good Times!.[3]
