AniBOOM is a animation website offering a collection of short animations and cartoon, animation tools (like ShapeShifter), and competitions [2]. Registered users can submit animated movies, which are then categorized according to type. Users are able to evaluate videos by giving them a number of “bombs” and by posting comments. Videos can be emailed to a friend, posted to a blog or social network profile page, or added to favorites. Users are given "BoomZones", or profile pages, in which to showcase their videos.
Unlike most video sharing websites, AniBOOM appeals primarily to professional or semi-professional animators, and offers syndication and/or production deals, either on TV or the web, for popular submissions. Non-animators can also submit ideas to the site for other animators to complete [3]. While most of content submitted is original, some of the content on AniBOOM can be found on other video sharing sites.
Background
Aniboom's CEO is former Israeli television executive Uri Shinar. The company was founded in 2005.
Aniboom Awards
Aniboom holds a yearly competition in which original animated movies are submitted for judgment by both a jury and aniBOOM community members[4]. Voting concludes in mid December and winners receive cash prizes. One Grand Winner is elected, while six top choices – three elected by the jury and three by the community - are also given cash rewards. In addition, 43 other videos are given honorable mention. All winners receive a selection of animation software and related literature. The judges form a select panel of senior animation and marketing professionals. The 2008 panel included Yair Landau, former president of Sony Pictures Digital.
In 2008, the winning video was Sebastian’s Voodoo by Joaquin Baldwin. Past Grand Winners are Aymeric Palermo for Jungle Jail (2007), and Jossie Malis for Machine (2006). In addition to prizes, aniBOOM Awards winners receive a helpful amount of industry exposure that can lead to professional advancement. For example, Joaquin Baldwin was contracted to produce an original series together with aniBoom Creators Studio. Other winners have gone on to create spots for well-known media and corporate clients. [5]
Aniboom Software Tools
The Aniboom web site includes web-based animation tools known collectively as aniMachines.[6]
Shapeshifter is a web-based animation creation tool. The user picks from four basic shapes and manipulates their position on the screen using Shapeshifter’s tool selection. Using this simple method, a frame-by-frame animated video can be created, complete with sound effects, to a maximum video file size of 50KB. The end results are posted on the aniBOOM website for a monthly competition. Entries receive votes by the aniBOOM community and a panel of judges, and the top-voted entry creators receive a selection of prizes[7].
microSmotion is a widget-based animation tool that uses a webcam to create stop-motion animated gif files. Creators record live backgrounds with the webcam and then add an animated overlay using the widget. The video can then be embedded in a variety of media. microSmotion videos can be exported to mobile phones or as a gif for use on any web site, or embedded on blogs or social network profiles and pages. Although simple to use, microSmotion has enabled the creation of some very innovative spots. A selection of these creations are on display at the aniBOOM website[8].
