Sports Radio Detroit (SRD) is a Detroit-based internet sports broadcasting and news network covering the Detroit Lions, Tigers, Pistons and Red Wings. SportsRadioDetroit.com rebranded its logo "SRD" in November 2013 when it relaunched its website.

History

Early History, LetsGoWingsMedia.com and LetsGoWingsRadio.com

SportsRadioDetroit originally began as an independent, experimental podcast series (entitled, The Red Line)[1] for the unofficial Detroit Red Wings site, LetsGoWings.com. The show debuted on the independent site, LetsGoWingsMedia.com on October 31, 2011 with hosts Mike Morland (formerly WUMD, WHFR, WCBN, 97.1 The Ticket) and Tony Maize (formerly WUMD, WCBN, 1270 AM Detroit).[2][3] Roger Castillo (Producer at 1270 AM in Detroit) joined the podcast series during episode 3.[4] After a successful first season, the podcast shifted to a permanent home at, LetsGoWingsRadio.com in September 2012.[5] It was here that the site continued to flourish during the summer of 2012 and into the NHL lockout in the fall of 2012.

With the NHL lockout looming in spring/summer of 2012, the trio of broadcasters knew the lack of progress in CBA talks would dramatically grind down the production of The Red Line podcast series. Due to the podcast's popularity and a strong Detroit sports market, The Red Line creator Mike Morland expanded the podcast series to cover all four major sports team in Detroit (Lions, Tigers, Pistons and Red Wings). In addition to the four major professional sports, SRD added coverage for soccer, fantasy sports and sports video games in the summer of 2013.

During its inception, an independent website was create to host the online radio sports network and ending the operation of LetsGoWingsRadio.com. All three broadcasters from LetsGoWingsRadio.com joined Sports Radio Detroit. Additionally, local media personalities Ben Szilagy and Chris Zadorozny joined the staff of Sports Radio Detroit in November 2012. Former WUMD (Dearborn) radio host Kevin Liddy joined the staff in December 2012.[6] With the expanded coverage, additional media personalities and NHL lockout of 2012, SportsRadioDetroit.com was born.[7]

With the Detroit sports fan in mind, SRD began interviewing athletes in the summer of 2013 including Detroit City FC star Knox Cameron, NFL Linebacker Chris WIlson and Detroit Lions star Ndamukong Suh. Additionally, in the Fall of 2013, Windsor Star sports columnist Bob Duff and Hockey Hall of Famer Larry Murphy both made appearances on the show, Red Wings SRD. In 2014, Detroit Red Wings center Riley Sheahan made an appearance on Red Wings SRD.

SportsRadioDetroit.com aired its first original broadcast on January 18, 2013 with the first episode of Red Wings SRD. The first live show on occurred on April 25, 2013.[8]

On November 17, 2013, Sports Radio Detroit revamped its website and introduced its new logo and brand, "SRD" - an update from the previous "Sports Radio Detroit" logo.

In January 2014, professional baseball umpire and Specs Howard graduate Mike Traicoff joined Sports Radio Detroit as a broadcaster.[9]
