Black Film Review

Black Film Review was an international scholarly publication focusing on films and filmmakers from the African Diaspora, with a focus on independent cinema. Published by the University of the District of Columbia (UDC) Black Film Institute under director Tony Gittens, with funding from the National Endowment for the Arts. The quarterly magazine published from 1985-1995.

Under Editor-in-Chief Jacquie Jones, the publication gained significant acclaim and was used as text at many film schools within the United States and abroad. Frequent contributors included film scholars Donald Bogle, Phyllis Klotman, Jacqueline Bobo, Pat Aufderheide, and Manthia Diawara.

During its last two years of publication, BFR was co-published by Eric Easter, and edited by historian Leasa Farrar Frazier.
